McAfee uninstall problems

Shortly after purchasing my new Inspiron 1505 laptops, I uninstalled the nightmarish McAfee in favor of better AV and Firewall programs.

Unfortunately, McAfee has problems letting go. My program updates are still being blocked. Cannot get rid of the McAfee personal firewall (Vista reports that I have two firewalls going, including that one). Vista also reports that I still have McAfee AV! Cannot find any "obvious" McAfee files in my computer. Have tried running the various supplemental McAfee uninstall tools (MCPR.exe and MPFCleanupTool.exe) both in regular and safe mode without success. They both report failures. Cannot reinstall McAfee since the 90 day trial period expired.

How do I get rid of the beast?

Thx. Already tried the MCPR.exe. Didn't do the trick

I've tried that too. I had the same problem. Kept coming up with incomplete removal. I found out it was a registry key, yet I couldn't delete it. I talked to McAfee and they told me to run the tool over and over, exactly like you, but I also had no success. I just decided to get another Anti Virus [I run AVG Free Anti-Virus now] and it works so much better. It's faster, doesn't bog down my system, and less problems. I recommend you just forget about McAfee.

Thx! I quickly discovered that McAfee was almost worse than a virus, so I went with another AV program that I have been using over the last year (Avast).

My problem is that I would like to forget McAfee, but it won't let me forget and the remnants of its AV engine and/or personal firewall may still be interfering with automatic updating of one of my essential programs.

You said there was a registry key problem. Do you remember which one?

Not completely positive of the exact registry key. But it was impossible to delete. I tried everything. I even ran RegAssassin with no luck. I don't think my computer will ever remove McAfee completely either. It's just one of things that you learn to deal with. Let's just cross our fingers and hope it doesn't screw up anything else.

I recently had a different.... but i believe "similar" problem... consider my story for what it's worth... and if you decide to try it, realize you're doing so at your own risk.
[You might want to contact McAfee first to see what they have to say about this idea]

I changed firewalls (from Windows to Comodo) but couldn't get Windows Security Center to acknowledge the change.  Searching the Comodo web-site, I located a thread that indicated the probable explanation was that my "Repository" had most likely become corrupted.

They gave a link to a suggested  DOS/command-line  procedure

1) to (temporarily) turn off Windows Management Service (WMS):
net stop winmgmt

2) to remove the exisiting Repository:
rd /S /Q %systemroot%\system32\wbem\Repository

3) and then to restart WMS:
net start winmgmt

4) A message later in that thread indicated a REBOOT was required  in order to get Windows to re-build the repository folder.

[ I modified their procedure, by renaming (rather than removing) the existing Repository... I figured this was a reasonable precaution, just in case their suggestion didn't work].

And it worked... at least for me.   I can't say it will work for everyone, but it's something to keep in the back of your mind.
