Cannot install AVG

I had AVG (either free or basic, can't recall) and a number of months ago decided to download the newest free version. The instruction was to uninstall the latest version. So I went to the programs list and deleted all references in there to AVG, including AVG anti-rootkit. After I did that, the new download began and almost immediately was stopped as I was informed that download could not proceed as AVG anti-rootkit was detetected and needed to be removed. I ran a search to no avail. I have no idea where to locate this anti-rootkit file/program. And, of course, the problem now is that I had already uninstalled the avg earlier version and now cannot install the latest version. Can someone tell me how to locate and remove the avg anti-rootkit so I can finally install virus protection.

Thank you.

ky331, I tried running the 32 bit avg removal tool you suggested. It didn't work. Here is what occurred. After downloading it I tried to run it. The following window popped up:

Open Execuble File?

"avg_remover_stf_x86_2011_1322(2).exe" is an executable file. Executable files may contain viruses or other malicious code that could harm your computer. Use caution when opening this file. Are you sure you want to launch "avg_remover_stf_x86_2011_1322(2).exe"?

So I clicked on yes. Two windows opened. The first was one with a black background and white lettering. The lettering was code. The second window overlaying the first one was a warning window. It read:

This application will remove AVG from your computer. It can require one or more starts during the cleaning process and it require to be started from the local drive. Please save all your work and close all other applications. Do you want to continue?

So I clicked on yes. That started the first window to begin processing something - lots of code scrolled down until it stopped and the window closed. And then nothing happened. No window advising that some process was occurring. No window telling me to re-start. No nothing. I sat passively looking at my screen while nothing happened.

At that point, I decided to re-start the computer. I then tried to install the new version of AVG. Immediately, again, it couldn't proceed as there was that damn avg anti-rootkit application still being detected. So now what? Anyone?

I have not tried that. But I will and see if that works. Thank you.

You wrote:   "So I went to the programs list and deleted all references in there to AVG, including AVG anti-rootkit."   Did you simply "delete" the files?   Or did you UNinstall the program?

If you simply  deleted  the anti-rootkit files from their program folder, that could have left remnants in the registry, and if so, that could be the problem now.

If that's what you did, you can try to RE-install the anti-rootkit program, and then, UNinstall it (via Control Panel, Add/Remove programs)... hopefully, that would remove it  "properly".

If you still have your copy of the anti-rootkit installer, use that one for a re-install.   If you don't have it, you can download another copy from http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/AVG-Anti-Rootkit.shtml

I used the incorrect wording. I removed/uninstalled all AVG programs, including anti-rootkit, from Add/Remove section in the Control Panel. I like your idea to re-install and then un-install again. As long as it can't hurt, I'll try.

If that does not help, try AppRemover: http://www.appremover.com/
