Asking for trouble..?

A number of new "top level" domains are being added to the list of ~1600 domains. Most people probably only know the common top level domains like .com, .net, .edu, .US. The following new domain names are now being added to the list: .dad, .esq, .prof, .phd, .nexus, .foo, .zip and .mov.

I understand them, except for ".foo"...??

The new domain names .zip and .mov may be asking for trouble because they're already used as file name extensions.  Suppose there's a link on a trustworthy site to open or download a safe file named "123456.zip". Will the browser (and site) interpret it as a .zip file stored on that same site or as an external .zip URL and navigate to some malware site which registered the name "123456.zip" and automatically installs malware on the PC?

Same thing is possible if you think you're opening a .mov file but suddenly end up at a similarly named .mov web site that installs malware.

I guess time will tell. In the meanwhile be even more careful about what you click...
