Ad-Aware SE Personal edition

I want to remove spyware from my Dell Dimension PC.  A friend told me about this website Adaware.com, which comes up as lavasoft.com.  They have a free download called Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition which is supposed to scan and protect your computer.  Does anyone have any experiance with this or know if it is safe and reputable?

I see that you just registered here at Dell.

Ad-Awaere is a very popular and highly regarded
free spyware detection and removal tool.  If you were
to go to the bottom of the page and type Ad-Aware
in the search field you'd come up with uncounted amounts
of information.

Practically everyone at this site either uses, has used,
or is planning on using Ad-Aware.  It is also recommended
by just about every Antispyware organization that I know of.

It is also very safe program to use.  After downloading and installing
I strongly recommend that you follow this link: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=48
for illustrated instructions on configuring, updating and running Ad-Aware.

Good luck and welcome to Dell forums:smileyhappy:

Mediterrasian,

After using AdAware SE, i'd also recommend posting back a HiJackThis log for analysis. That way, we can make sure there's nothing on your system that shouldn't be.

Thank you for all the info and the links you provided.  I very much appreciate your help.  I will try these links.

I went to the  Ad-aware link which brought me to the C-net site where I attempted to download the Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition.  There was a choice to save the program or run it.  I chose save, although a dialogue box warned me it may not be safe.  After saving it, when trying to run it, another dialogue box said it was not advisable to run this program.  So I did not run it.  Can you tell me what is going on?

C-net has a good reputation and is a safe place to download from.
You will get those pop-up boxes anytime you run a program that has
been downloaded.  This is standard with sp2's Security Center.

If you are unsure about a program that you have downloaded, you can usually
scan that file with your AV software by right clicking on the file, then
select scan with XXX"  (in my case it is NOD32 Antivirus System).

I think it is safe for you to go ahead and run the install program for Ad-Aware.
