Venue 8 Pro Wifi Failure Log

Hi, I have a Venue 8 Pro 5830 64GB and experience the following drop issue with wifi:

  1. tends to drop in the middle of extended downloads/streaming/youtube
  2. when it drops, it shows as unavailable and doesn't see my router or any of the others in the area
  3. attempting to reset it by turning the wifi slider off fails and it just reverts back to on
  4. each time this happens, the failure event details are logged at C:\AR6K_FW_Recovery.log
  5. driver restart is required to reconnect, either by reboot or toggling advanced driver properties like the roaming aggressiveness setting 1 or 2 times (disable/enable in Device Manager usually fails to restart it, leaving it with the "yellow ! bang icon")

Reference to others who probably have the same issue (20g and jadesse):

This issue is unrelated to the Windows Update failure and unrelated to those who simply have temporary drops, limited connectivity, or sleep/wake drops. It seems to be caused by the adapter firmware/driver terminating due to a TX (transfer) hang. Could anyone who is experiencing these issues confirm they're also getting that C:\AR6K_FW_Recovery.log and paste the contents of their file?

Opening the log in Wordpad, it describes the failure as "Control Endpoint TX Hang":

Please list your specs in a similar way, so maybe we can find a common point of failure.
I hope Dell/MS can fix this issue soon. Thank you for reading!

For Dell Venue 8 Pro 5830 running Windows 10 Home/Pro 1511 10586.164 Intel Atom Z3740D. This solution was originally proposed in March 2016 by jjwatmyself with nobody31’s help. Testing completed by jjwatmyself and nobody31. No known issues to-date (April 4 2016).

Solution is for Windows 10 and not tested on Windows 8 or 8.1. Assumption is that the device already has the latest 1538 WiFi+Bluetooth drivers, published by Dell, installed 3.7.2.59:

  • Download Windows 10 32 bit Bluetooth and Wi-Fi drivers for LG's 10T550 Tab Book Duo (same hardware as DV8P)

http://www.notebook-driver.com/lg-10t550-tab-book-driver-software/

Version with Atheros IHV Service / Libraries (tested by jjwatmyself)

  • Copy the following files to a temporary location (needed after driver install)

    • C:\windows\system32\athihvs.dll

    • C:\windows\system32\athihvui.dll

  • For each installer, right-click, run as Administrator

  • Copy the files back

    • C:\windows\system32\athihvs.dll

    • C:\windows\system32\athihvui.dll

  • Reboot

Version without Atheros IHV Service / Libraries (tested by nobody31)

  • For each installer, right-click, run as Administrator

  • Click start, type regedit, right click run as administrator

  • Navigate to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet, search for athihvs.dll

  • Export Key (yellow folder) IHVExtensions in case you need to restore
  • Delete Key (yellow folder) IHVExtensions

  • Reboot

Wireless and Bluetooth will show as follows:

  • Dell Wireless 1538 802.11 a/g/n adapter 3.7.2.61686 9/22/2014

  • Qualcomm Atheros Bluetooth UART Transport Driver 2.2.0.22 1/22/2015

Both solutions offer stable Bluetooth and Wireless, long battery life using connected standby. As of this writing, there are no measurable advantages or disadvantages of either proposed config over the other.

Final tip on this is that that there is massive interference with Bluetooth when on 2.4GHZ Wi-Fi (especially when Bluetooth devices are connected).  Download speeds are horrific. Upload speeds do no appear to be impacted.  Solve this by using 5GHz Wi-Fi and the download speeds are near wired performance when close to the access point.  Alternatively, if it is convenient, turn Bluetooth off.

Couldn't add these details to the first post:

Event Viewer log: Microsoft-Windows-WLAN-AutoConfig/Operational

After the firmware/driver logs the failure:

WLAN AutoConfig service has successfully disconnected from a wireless network.
Network Adapter: Dell Wireless 1538 802.11 a/g/n Adapter
Interface GUID: X
Connection Mode: Automatic connection with a profile
Profile Name: X
SSID: X
BSS Type: Infrastructure
Reason: The network is disconnected by the driver.

When it attempts to auto-reconnect after dropping:

WLAN AutoConfig service failed to connect to a wireless network.
Network Adapter: Dell Wireless 1538 802.11 a/g/n Adapter
Interface GUID: X
Connection Mode: Automatic connection with a profile
Profile Name: X
SSID: X
BSS Type: Infrastructure
Failure Reason:An internal failure prevented the operation from completing.

I can confirm the exact same issue with wireless as you.

my WiFi goes unavailable usually after streaming video like Netflix or YouTube.  am forced to reboot in order to get WiFi back. I checked and also have the errorlog in c:\ with the same content as you posted.

I am not confident that there is a fix for this issue as these forums are full of WiFi issues with no resolve. many people have sent their devices back in for repair only to have their repaired devices still doing the same thing.  feel that dell is just ignoring the issue on the first generation venue 8 pros and hoping the issue is fixed with the newer models.. in other words, I think dell is going to stick it to us..

Thanks for the confirmation! I hope something can be done about this, as it's a clearly defined issue. If they can find which driver/firmware code logs that message, maybe they can trace it back to the fault. If possible, could you list the details of your v8p like the bottom of the first post (32GB or 64GB, wifi driver version, wifi security, bios version, bluetooth state, microsd present or not, etc.)? It might help to give them more information to work with. If they can recreate the issue, then the odds of a fix should hopefully increase.

i can confirm this for all of my three venue 8 tablets.

I may add that during the past several months I experimented with several different routers and that leaves me convinced that the router the venue 8 connects to does play a significant role in this behavior.

I can confirm, I have this exact problem. Right now it is my only consideration for getting rid my DV8 Pro, as I have found no work around. I can not work extended periods of time on this device, which I purchased for.

I believe the problem is even worse than described, as I use Bluetooth exclusively for keyboard / mouse input. Since I have Bluetooth running all the time, when problem occurs as described in the OP, Bluetooth is also knocked offline, same issue.....can not turn Bluetooth off and then back on to recover, must restart or perform an enable/disable of the WLAN network adapter to recover both the WLAN and Bluetooth.

I would also like to add 90% of the time I am using IE and Chrome for research, RDP'ing to the workplace, or casual web browsing and not streaming music or video and this problem occurs.

So annoying to have an internet connected wireless tablet not be able to keep an internet/bluetooth connection. This is a big fail for this device. I hope other people read these posts before running out to buy a DV8 Pro for doing serious work over wireless for extended periods, they will be disappointed.

Thank you for those details! Your microsd and bluetooth states are the opposite of mine, so that probably eliminates those states as the cause. It's probably either the BIOS or wifi driver/security.

same error here, and same configuration, I think I will switch back to android tablets...

Thanks, gmanca. Incidentally, the purpose of this thread is not only to see how many users have this specific wifi issue, but to get detailed information, specs, and logs (like Userp's post) for Dell to use in order to make their job easier when creating a fix. If anyone from Dell sees this thread, please let us know if you require additional details.

I made a couple changes to my router a couple of nights ago. first of all I registered  the venue's mac address into the  dhcp table to assign it a static ip.. and the other change was to switch the router mode from dual band to just wireless G and B .. I have had no wireless issues for the last 2 days and been testing it with lots of streaming which usually would result in my wireless going down within 30mins of streaming a movie..

Yes, I didn't post the log because it looks exactly the same as those already posted: one thing I noticed is that I have no issues when connecting to wireless access points (such as my android phone).

I have latest Bios, Firmware, Driver versions installed: I tried uninstalling the Windows updates KB2883200, KB2887595, KB2903939 and it didn't solve the problems: I tried reinstalling those updates in the correct order as suggested by Microsoft and it didn't solve the problems: I tried every possible solution suggested but it keeps disconnecting from the router and I have to switch off and back on the router in order to be able to connect to it with other devices: as soon as the tablet loses the connection, my router becomes invisible to other devices....

Hmm, that may be a separate issue with your router, gmanca. If all devices can't see the router, it probably means the failure occurred on the router instead of the Venue. The issue of the thread causes only the Venue to become unable to see ANY nearby routers, as the firmware/driver terminates. I haven't noticed a general failure across all connected devices to the router when this happens and the router hasn't needed a restart to restore connectivity, only the Venue driver. You may be able to fix your wifi issue by updating the firmware on your router.

The next time it happens, and all of your devices lose connectivity, please be sure to open the log file with Wordpad and see if a new event has been appended to the file with that same date/time on the 'Recovery Start' line. There is a chance that the firmware/driver failure causes some improper network activity that corrupts your router, so it might be good to confirm.

Agreed, that is most likely a separate issue gmanca. I do not see those symptoms, all my other wireless devices remain connected when the DV8 fails. Then again, it would be interesting as NOBODY31 mentioned, to see if the log corresponds to the failure of all other wireless devices. If it does, that might yield some useful information. Perhaps the router is logging a status message that may be more useful than the error log we see on the DV8.. Let us know.

It looks the same as the other posted: I don't think the blame is on the router, I have several other devices connected to it and I've never had these problems: the strange behaviour only occurs when I connect with the Venue 8: anyway I'm going back to an android tablet: hope you guys will have better luck!

A little question for everyone getting these errors: on your router's wireless settings page, if you have an option for "Channel width", is it set to 20hz, 40hz, or Auto? I was just thinking about the possibility that the router on Auto for this, or various other settings like "Channel" (1-11 kind of option) might contribute to this issue. For example, if the router on Auto operates on 20hz as the Venue connects to it, but later switches to 40hz, maybe the Venue's wifi driver/firmware is unable to handle this switch and collapses.

On my particular setup, the router is set to Channel: 11, Channel Width: Auto. On my router, these 2 seem to be the only options that may dynamically change during operation. If the error occurs again, I'm going to switch Channel Width to the fixed 20hz setting and see if that helps.
