Upgrade to Windows 10 Home, version 1511, 10586

Upgrade to Windows 10 Home, version 1511, 10586 from Version 10.0.10240 failed to install on my Venue 8 Pro. It stuck at the 40% progress overall and at 23% for installing features and drivers. Fortunately, the forced reboot caused it to restore the earlier version, which took only a few minutes. Anyone else having this problem with the Nov major release?

My history is seven failures to apply the update.  I am still on 10240, and the update check also shows that I am up to date.

I've been using an SD card for the memory, and was going to remove and use a thumbdrive if Update gave me another chance.

What is odd.  I can install 10240 from Win 8.1 from a clean install.  Then the next thing I do is run Windows update...the TH2 update is there and fails...go figure.  MS has really screwed up this update.

Keeping at 8.1...fewer privacy issues

I got it done. I removed the microsd card, freed up 8 Gb on c: drive, downloaded media creation tool, had the tablet in portrait mode and away I went,

Congratulations! But it should not be so hard. I'm loathe to use the Media Creation Tool because it warns that files needed to roll back to the previous version will be deleted. Not sure what the case might be if the Windows install were to fail. I can wait for a future update that works- this one does not appear to have what I really want which is the restoring of OneDrive linking to a folder in removable media and placemarks for non-local files.

I can't believe it!  I googled it...found the solution and ignored it.  OK...smack me.  So I took out my SD card...ran the upgrade again and now I have the latest version of Win10.  Put the SD card back in and all apps on it worked like normal.  Hopefully, MS will fix this for the next big release.

Little additional note!  Check your camera and make sure it works.  Unfortunately, the new Fall update broke my camera and I get an Oops!  Something doesn't work and a code with it.  I reinstalled the Intel Chipset drivers from Dell for Win 10...and it still doesn't work.  I may have to go back to the drawing board AGAIN!

Had to go back to 10.0.10240 to get the cameras to work again.  There is something wrong with the camera drivers with the new version release!  Tons of complaints in the MS community from all tablet owners, not just Dell.

I have tried everything but attaching a USB HDD drive (actual hard drive, not a flash card). I can't get this to install. When I take my SD card out and use a USB flash drive it says I need 10GB of space to install! I can't make that much space available on C, even if I uninstall pretty much everything! The odd thing is I've been able to do Windows Insider upgrades by telling Windows to use the available space on my SD card. When I try that here I get the problem others are having. It stops at the 40% / 23% mark. I'm assuming (hoping) MS gets a fix out for this. Maybe I should use a larger flash drive, one that has at least 10GB available. And of course, when I do use my SD card for the Windows Insider updates it takes really, really long. The SD reader isn't exactly fast.

I imagine MS will fix the camera drivers very soon. I haven't used the camera at all since I got this 2 years ago.

I tried upgrading using the media creation tool first and it got stuck at 40%. Then I tried upgrading through USB using the downloaded ISO file from Microsoft, again it got stuck at 40%.

Have you tried upgrading the BIOS to A12 before upgrading to Win 10 1511?

I tried to install Windows 10 pro version 1511 twice, at first by upgrading through the media creation tool and then by using the downloaded ISO file. Both methods failed at 40%.

What BIOS version do you have? Have you tried installing the latest BIOS version A12 then upgrade?

My problem was the SD card.  I have the most up to date firmware on the tablet.  Once I removed the SD card, the upgrade installed.  Beware...camera doesn't work in this build.  If that doesn't bother you...go for it!

I have the 64GB SSD in mine...with about 45 free...I get that.  Odd thing is that the original release of Windows 10 allowed many to use the SD card to help install.  This build did not offer the same.  As a matter of fact, if you have SD card in the machine during install...it becomes one of the reasons to fail.  I called MS about a few issues during install.  Was shocked to find out how little the techs know and oftentimes can't help.  Very discouraging...one thing to think about is removing recovery partition for Windows 8.1 (if you have one).  One thing that might help...use your Win 8.1 recovery disk to recover the machine back to factory.  Remove the recovery partition.  That should get you down to less than 10 GB of space used (especially if you only have 32 GB).  Then try to reinstall...

How much free space did you have on your C drive? It wanted 10GB for me, and I couldn't make more than 7 or 8 available.

I think Microsoft mentioned something about the update being disabled if you rolled back to a previous version of Windows 10 after you did the update, and then the only way to get the update is to go to the windows store and find some sort of UPDATE button? This makes sense so that you dont constantly have Windows trying to install an update that will break your machine.

If you noticed the ISO or media creation tool fails to install try installing straight through Windows update (if not disabled yet) or through the Windows store.

Not irreversible at all!  Create a USB installer version and you have the entire installer at your fingertips.  Also, during install, it creates windows.old.  If you decide you don't like what you see, go to settings...updates and chose to go back to an older version of windows.  I have done it a few times, with no problems.  The windows.old stays for 30 days...then automatically deleted...
