DELL servers administration/management tool

Hi there,

We have big amount of DELL servers with dedicated iDRAC port and we manage them separately.

For operations such as firmware upgrade, RAID creation, changing BIOS settings on a server, we go to iDRAC of every single server and doing it on every single host.

I'm curious, if it's possible to join all our Dell PowerEdge servers in to single Enterprise tool, where we can do such management actions from single admin panel ?

I heard about DELL Openmanage Enterprise. Is that what we need for the actions which I described above ? I read some info of this tool, but I'm not sure that is right for us.

Considering that we want to upgrade firmware via some central management tool, I guess there should be an access of each server's iDRAC to internet. Though, our iDRACs don't have access to the internet and we only can upgrade firmware by uploading it from admin's local drive.

What can you recommend ? Will this tool be good for us, or rather unneeded software.

Hi,

I can help you with some information about DELL OpenManage Enterprise, but I cannot give you a definitive recommendation on whether it is suitable for your needs. You may need to consult with a DELL technical support representative for more specific guidance.

If you have a large number of Dell PowerEdge servers and are managing them individually, OME can significantly improve your management efficiency and reduce administrative overhead. The ability to perform firmware upgrades without direct internet access to each server's iDRAC is an added advantage, enhancing security and control.

I recommend considering Dell OpenManage Enterprise as a solution for centralizing the management of your Dell PowerEdge servers. It can streamline your operations, improve efficiency, and enhance security.

DELL OpenManage Enterprise is a web-based system management and monitoring application that provides a comprehensive view of the DELL servers, chassis, storage, and network switches in the enterprise network1. It allows you to discover, deploy, update, and monitor up to 8,000 devices from a single console2 3. It also has a plug-in architecture that enables you to extend its functionality with additional features, such as integration with VMware vCenter, Microsoft Systems Center, SupportAssist, and CloudIQ1 4.

Some of the actions that you described, such as firmware upgrade, RAID creation, and changing BIOS settings, can be performed with OpenManage Enterprise by using firmware baselines, deployment templates, and configuration baselines2. However, to use these features, you need to have the devices registered with OpenManage Enterprise and configured with the appropriate credentials and network settings2. You also need to have the OpenManage Enterprise virtual appliance installed on a supported hypervisor, such as VMware ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V, or KVM1 2.

According to the OpenManage Enterprise Support Matrix, the iDRACs of the devices do not need to have access to the internet to be managed by OpenManage Enterprise5. However, they do need to have access to the OpenManage Enterprise appliance and the repository server where the firmware files are stored5. You can use either the default repository server provided by DELL or a custom repository server that you set up5. You can also upload firmware files from your local drive to the repository server through the OpenManage Enterprise console5.

I hope this information helps you to understand the features and requirements of OpenManage Enterprise. You can find more details and resources on the DELL support site 1 2 3 4 5. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask me. 😊

Wow, thanks for your tips, Martin! I will check it out.

Btw, I don't see prices for it. Do we need to contact DELL support in order to calculate it ?

Or is there any chance it can be free to use (for monitoring and configuration), based on specific idrac lincense ?

Our idrac is licensed as "iDRAC9 15g Enterprise License"
