Hi YuSa,

Can you please confirm the Symmetrix microcode level and which Service Processor / SymmWin "script" you are using?

The Service Processor / SymmWin scripts are intended only for use by EMC certified Customer Service Engineers.

Your friendly local EMC Service Representative would be able to confirm the correct state of your Symmetrix before attempting to execute any SymmWin scripts.

However, from your last note it sounds like you are using the SymmWin Procedures > Procedure Wizard > Code Load procedures > Configure and Install New Symmetrix script?

If this is so then the entire Symmetrix needs to be set OFFLINE.

Similarly if you are using the Procedures > Procedure Wizard > Disk Utilities > Vtoc ALL Drives script again the Symmetrix disk directors need to be OFFLINE.

Best Regards,
Michael.

yusa,

Are the devices offline? They need to be to be clipped or DSF'd.
Have the Symm devices ever been online then off?

yusa,

Sorry for the hijack of thread.
I know that it is at the end of the work day for your area.
Hope that you were able to initialize or clip the new volumes.

Another thing that came to mind, if you are doing a clip to existing volumes that they also need to be offline but not configured offline. Still need the paths to the devices.

yusa,

From the Mainframe you want to first check the device status:
d u,,,xxxx,1 - displays the unit status of one device.
d u,,,xxxx,8 - displays the unit status of 8 devices.

From the Mainframe you also want to check to see if there is a job running or allocated to it:
d u,,alloc,xxxx,1 - displays the allocation to that deivce any job.

From the Mainframe to vary off a device:
v xxxx, offline - takes the device (only) offline, no change to the paths.

From the Mainframe to vary on the device:
v xxxx,online - brings the device online.

Hi,

I don t have any mainframe connection ! with Sym 5 ( 8430).
I will connect only :Solaris server to 8430.

I want to explain my problem a little bit ,I think it 'll be more usefull ... I build a new "bin" file for the new configuration that I did on a symmetrix ... and after that I uploaded "bin" file ....and during the next step I faced to choose for the format that I have to done. I choose a option "No speacial Format " that mean that I will use for open systems connection and after recieved that error message.

YuSa,

Sorry, I was assuming that from the way you asked your first question that you were doing an init of the devices from Mainframe.

So do you do your own maintenance and changes via bin files?
Is this a new Symmetrix and initial install?

Just trying to get a feel where you are in the process and how we can help.

YuSa,

Opps, wanted to add first but already entered.

Depending on the changes in devices and protection, there are requirements to do the Symmetrix VTOC, etc.

YuSa,

Can you call into the support center or use the web and open an SR so the local people can help you? This looks like a lengthy process if you are a self maintained and if you are not, we can not authorize you to progress in any operation that would void your maintenance.

I apologize whole heartedly if I have miss interpreted you and have delayed any help.

Also if you are not familiar with the process, the local people can assist as appropriately and as needed.

Sincerely,

Michael

Yusa,

Did Mike Lee's suggestion helped or did you call the support lab?

Hope that the silence is a good indication for you.
