At what point does change to Storage Group/Maksing View impact host.

Our VMAX 20k volumes are presented to hosts through Masking Views.  If we add new volumes to a Storage Group that is part of a masking view are those volumes immediately presented to the host?  IE will you be able to see them with an lsdev command (AIX), or diskmgmt.msc (windows). Or would we need to run cfgmgr (AIX) or diskmgmt rescan (Windows) to for the new volumes to be presented to the host.

I'm trying to find out if I can add new volumes to an SG during a critical application time without negativly impacting the Server/OS/Application.  I think if volumes just poped up this may create a problem.

on HPUX/AIX/Solaris/Linux/ESX you have to rescan to discover the devices.  On modern versions of Windows they will typically show up in Disk Management right away, sometimes you have to rescan. On Win2k8 and Win2k12 you have to bring them online before you can write a signature and create a partition.

We add volumes on the fly all the time (including tier 1 apps ), modern operating systems can handle it without issues.
