* Turn the laptop off
* Turn the laptop on and press F2
* On the BIOS main screen, you should see a reference to "ODD". If you do, that is your optical disk drive being seen correctly. This means that the hardware is funtional. If this is the case, the fault you have is with the operating system

For us or our users to assist in troubleshooting, we need more information.
* What specific Dell computer model?
* Is this an "out of box" issue or had the drive worked in the past?
* If worked in the past, what hardware or software changes did you make prior to the issue?

Inspiron 15  3000 series. It worked at one time because I loaded some software when I 1st bought it.

Haven't made any hardware changes.  Downloaded software like virus protection . Trouble is I've had it for 2 years and may have loaded ton's of downloads.

Thanks for your help Chris. After checking the BIOS, it was there, I went to Dell's website and found I was missing 2 updates. After installing them the odd works fine!

I have this issue and attempted to resolve as described. However, in Bios under ODD it states "none". That is interesting as the drive was working properly days ago and not all of a sudden its like it does not exist. It opens, closes and even sounds like it attempts to read a disc. I cannot find a driver for it as my computer does not think I have it installed. Its not in Device Manager either.

Please help.

It is NOT SOLVED !!!
ODD shows none even thought original DVD drive is there.

It is not accessable by latest dell firmware releases.

Please FIX it finally. It is NOT solved by any means!

Mine says SATA ODD but across from it it says [NOT DETECTED]. Is that what it should say? Am I looking in the right area?

i have the same problem. ( updated the bios firmware and that corrected the problem , but only for a short time and then the dvd drive disappears again. i save he firmware download from dell on my desktop and i just keep installing it over and over when it happens that i loose my dvd drive. It tells me that i am updating bios a13 to a13 and it works for a while .
