SMART Short Self Test Failed

Hi,

I have dell XPS 15 Laptop with Samsung HDD (640GB). Dell PC Check ran a scheduled hardware scan and it shows "Failed" while running tests for SMART Short Self Test. In summary it indicates that my HDD might fail anytime. I  called up Dell customer care and they said my HDD needs to be debugged which will erase all my data, partition, everything. I told them to replace the HDD but they said that debugging will solve the problem.

Now i have some questions:

1. Is debugging HDD will solve the issue as told by the dell representative or do i insist on replacing the HDD itself?

2. Does Failing the above said test means that my disk have bad sectors in it?

Any expert opinion is appreciated.

Hi Vipin,

Run the Dell diagnostics on your drive first. To test your hard drive using your Dell Drivers and Utilities disc:
1. Reboot your system. When you see the Dell logo, hit F12 to enter the boot menu.
2. Insert the Dell Drivers and Utilities disc in your CD/DVD drive.
3. Pick the option to boot from the CD/DVD drive.
4. You will be prompted to hit any key to continue booting from the CD/DVD drive.
5. You will be prompted to hit 1 to run the Dell diagnostics. You may see two such menus.
6. Select Test System.
7. Select Custom Test.
7. Use the arrow keys or mouse to select your hard drive.
9. Click Run Tests.
10. Write down any error messages.

I tried to run the Dell Diag. but i think the Disc is faulty. It goes well till the prompt (Enter 1 to run dell diag. 2. to Exit) but when i select '1' and press Enter, it gets stuck there. Nothing happens.

I also tried Pre-Boot System Assessment which is giving DST error code-0146.

Any sugggestions??

Go to downloads and get the latest diagnostics. You can load it onto a CD or flash drive, boot with that and run it from there.

Hi OSPREY4,

I talked to dell executive and he is sending a technician to replace my HDD.

Thank you a ton for helping me out :emotion-2:
