Recording from DVD video/audio to Hard-Drive

I'm trying to copy DVD Audio/video to my hard-drive.  How can I do this, and what do I need in hardware/software?  I'm using a laptop CP.  Can anyone help.?

.vob etc files are not strange.. home made dvd's have same file structure as commerical... but you willn't find the answer to copying commerical dvds in this forum.. since its against the TOS

if it is a home made dvd try one of nero/sonic/ deep burner

"If you're trying to copy a modern DVD, like a new movie, it is copy protected.  So . . . you can't copy it."
Actually that is not entirely true. It can indeed be copied, and very easily too with the appropriate software installed.  It's just that the topic is forbidden here on this user forum, and yes, it is also illegal to make copies of copyrighted material.  Not trying to be smart here because I'm certainly not, :smileyhappy: but I thought the clarification might be beneficial to the original questioner....
