How to Transfer Data from a Hard Drive in a non working laptop

My Inspiron 9100 died one day - and if I press power it clicks on and off.  I bought an Inspiron 9400/1705 and I would like to take the data off my old harddrive and transfer to either my new one or my external.  I can remove the old hard drive - is there a way to hook it up to the new one to transfer files without having the power from the 9100? Thanks for any help.
