Dimension 9200 - adding dual layer (lightscribe?) DVD burner - what is compatible?
Hi folks!
I've got the Dimentia 9200 with a standard DVD burner from Dell. I'd like to add a
dual layer with perhaps lightscribe for higher quality (uncompressed?) DVDs.
What will fit in the front panel - 3.5"? Half height? SATA, IDE? I have a media card reader installed and a single DVD burner. I believe one extra CD/DVD bay in the front panel is still available.
I see 2MB and 4MB cache versions online, with the 4MB being VERY expensive. Also, 16x, 18x and 20x. What to do? What's the best technology - not going BluRay/HD just yet - the wars are still waging and I do not see a victor emerging in the foreseeable future. Does anyone actually use the lightscribe capability? I don't have a CD labeling printer.
TIA for the advice. Are the $29 units that I see online good enuff?

Hi Tony,
The 9200 series is an all SATA system, so you will have to go with a SATA drive.
You will not be able to use the 3.5" bay for optical drives but you are correct, you do have an available 5.25" bay.
You may have already seen this but here is on-line manual:
9200
We have had a few posts from Members going with the LightScribe, the biggest issue is the cost of the discs, and time to burn the image/graghic to the disc, otherwise most are pleased.
The brands our Regulars recommend the most are Plextor, Lite-on, Pioneer, NEC, Sony, Benq to name a few, and the on-line shopping is New Egg, John & I listed in the other post about the Verbatim discs.
If you stay with the above, the costs under $40.00 is a very good deal.
I am going to drop you a PM, if you do not mind.
Best Regards!

Hi Tony,
I was sure you were not aware of the views, most of the time not a big issue but in a long thread, can make it difficult to follow. A tip here or there is always helpful, thanks for understanding.
As for the size, yes all of the internal will be standard 5.25 unless you see "slimline". then it is just the height.
DVD-R DL was a late bloomer so many drives are just now supporting it. You have to check the spec to make sure. I have always been a Plextor and Lite-on fan but have not moved to the Lightscribe market, the cost of media turned me off so I never considered it. Jack (fireberd) and maybe Mike (Skybird) I believe may have one, so I will drop them a note and see if they could recommend a good one for you. Also I will drop John a note as well. The reviews on this model look good other than it seems to be too loud when burning.
It support all format even DVD-RAM:
Lite-On 20X
Unfortunately my friend, I wish I could quarentee one for you, but that would be unfair on my part, man made stuff are not always created equal.
I have a Lite-on DVD-ROM drive that is 6 years old and used daily and a Plextor 708 that my niece I figured would have worn out bye now, but still clicking along.
Take care my friend

Hi Tony,
John and I may step on each other, we are both on-line. There is "suppose" to be shoulder screws on the inside of the drive panel insert.
Here is the steps:
