Replistor replication to an Isilon

Hi,

We are moving our CIFS data to an Isilon. We replicate user Data from our regional offices to our main DataCentre. This DataCentre used to have a Celerra to replicate the data to, but now we want to go to our new Isilon.

When we try and replicate to it we get the following error. This error basically says that it could not change certain security attributes when the Data is being put on the Isilon. Is the Isilon fully CIFS compliant? Is there something missing on the Replistor side? Any help would be appreciated.

Blocking security for file \\?\UNC\??????????\SI-Rep-Data from site????????????file "D:\AJCTest\". Set failed.
Windows-text: 5 - Access is denied.

Description
The security descriptor of the specified file from the specified site and file
could not be set. The file is now blocked.

Resolution
1. Use the Windows error text to resolve the problem.
2. Unblock the file.

Claguey ,

Changing from a Clariion to Isilon should be possible. You did not mention whether you are currently replicating to a URL (a File Share) on the Clariion. If the Target location appears in Windows as a local drive then it would probably be fully NTFS compatible. If the Target is a Windows File Share it would be best to check the permissions. The error you are showing is the normal Windows file permission error. (net helpmsg 5) (Access is denied) That is not a RepliStor error. RepliStor is just echoing the Windows error it is seeing when it tries to write to that file/folder.

Since RepliStor is now End of Service Life you will not be able to open an EMC Service Request for the RepliStor product. However, Isilon is fully supported and I believe that is where the problem lies. Please open an Isilon Service Request and ask them to monitor the RepliStor replication of some sample files. Since Windows is raising an Access is Denied error the Isilon server is probably blocking some portion of the file save to the Isilon server. Assuming you are replicating from a Windows node that is in an Active Directory environment I would suggest the Isilon is blocking the application of Extended Attributes or Windows AD permissions on the file.

Another way to test this would be to check the “None” box in the specification where it is telling RepliStor to replicate the permissions. The default is SIDs. If that replicates the file without errors then you can be sure that the Isilon is blocking RepliStor from replicating some kind of permissions that are associated with the file(s).

If this is set up like a SAMBA share it is going to be using UNIX/Linux equivalent permissions. SAMBA type shares are not always 100% NTSF compatible. Telling RS not to replicate all the NTFS type permissions and/or Extended Attributes would probably resolve the issue short term but from a security point of view may not be the best overall resolution.
