Attaching a RDM for Replication Manager for Exchange DB recovery

Hi All,

we have Exchange 2007 running on VMware Infrastructure, on Windows 2008VM

Replication Manager is used as a backup solution.

It is working fine.

But I have some questions on the set up.

We attach RDMs from the Storage (which is VNX7500) , we attach the RDM LUN snapshots as RDMs rather than LUN itself. (Atleast I think so)

Why is that?

I was told, this is because while mounting a replica, these RDMs are used to mount the DB there, i.e the mount happens on the RDM.

And I was told this is because we have selected for the LUN visiblity in the Replication Manager while restoring.

I am bit confused on all these, can someone please clarify?

Regards,

A

Hi there Athreya -

You are absolutely correct.

It is not a requirement of Replication Manager or any software, more how ESX kernel wants have an understanding of the underlying characteristics of the snap LUN (aka device), PRIOR to EMC activation the snapshot session ontop of the device.

Thanks!

James

Hi James,

Just Curious.

How is it different from attaching a RDM directly?

Just want to know the underlying mechanism of working of attaching a snapshot LUN as RDM

Athreya

Hi All,

From the admin Guide,

When you create a replica that uses CLARiiON snapshots in a

VMware environment, Replication Manager creates a snapshot

session. The snapshot session is a point-in-time copy of the source

LUN.

To mount this snapshot session, you must create a snapshot device.

The snapshot device is the handle used to access the contents of the

snapshot session.

For a mount host to access a snapshot session, the following

prerequisites must be met:

Is this the reson?
