Scanning a double sided document

I would like to know if there is a smarter way to scan double sided documents using the 3115cn multifunction printer. The problem is that when I scan a double sided document to a PDF (or any other document that cannot go through document feeder) the printer creates a separate file for each page which I have to merge manually. Is there a way to scan separated pages and then have the printer save the PDF file at the end?

I was just running into the same problem with my 1815dn.  Using the ADF, I can create a file of all front pages and all back pages, but I can't figure out a good way to merge them.  This is somewhat worse than your situation, as I can find no way to end up with each file being its own page, which would be far easier to merge.

I could not find an acceptable solution.  Someone solved the problem for HPs using a perl script, though that's hardly the best option for windows users (and it requires separate files per page which I lack).  That said, since you currently have a file per page, perhaps it can help you.  Likewise, PDFcreator can easilly merge multiple files -- and I believe it can be used via the command line, which should make it possible to write a batch file.

How many pages are you talking about? When I had this issue, I just made a copy of the back of every sheet, then inserted them into their proper place behind their "front" page and used the ADF to scan single sides into  one pdf file.

Obviously, this takes extra time and uses paper, but if there's no other choice, short of writing Perl scripts or buying Adobe Acrobat... :emotion-5:

That would obviously work.  I don't think that Acrobat will do the trick , but I will check it out for certain later to make sure.

Don't know for certain that Acrobat would do it, but that's my understanding.

Also came across this shareware which says: "...Automates the process of splitting and merging multiple PDF files. Rearrange pages in a document..."  I know nothing about this app, so "buyer beware" :emotion-5:

Acrobat will do the work, but I was looking for a more automated solution (thought I am not going to write a pers script).

Photocopying is out of the quesiton because of the lost of quality and the waste of paper.

The easiest would be for the 3115 cn printer to save all pages into memory and wait for input by the user that the pdf file is finished (just like our HP scanner already does).

Thank you for the link, I think this might help. However, a little update from Dell along the lines I outlined above would be more than welcome.

Giovanni,

Keep in mind that only the forum Moderators actually work for Dell. The rest of us are just users of Dell systems who volunteer our time to help other users. So if you're looking for a formal response from Dell about your suggestions, you're unlikely to get it through these forums. :emotion-5:

RoHe,

Thank you for your reply and sorry if I wasn't very clear: I appreaciate all answers and thank everyone who takes the time for posting. I know it is hard to get "official" answers.

I was only hoping I had missed something and that the scanner had some basic funcitonnality that comes with other machines. I am naive enought that maybe the feedback will get through somehow. This has happened in the past.
