Pre-Purchase Question: Dell Precision T3640 CPU Upgrade and Power Supply
Current setup for the CPU is Core i5-10500 with integrated graphics and 460-watt power supply.
Can the CPU be upgraded to Core i7-10700F?
And based on the service manual, the T3640 uses ATX power supply, is that correct?
Also, can I use a DDR4 3200? I have two unused RAM modules.

Uses Dell power supply that resembles EPS12v not ATX.
Not sure about the 8 pin connector for the CPU.
Also if you ever want optical drive order with that. Not easy or possible to modify face-plate for the non optical drive model.
Its not a simple yes or no answer.
@DELL-Chris M would have more information.
If standard EPS 12v fits then yes its standard.
Has up to 1000W power supply option but I dont know about the VRM heatsink and CPU heatsink for 125W CPU.

Also the Top and Front fans fans are optional 120mm
HDD fans have teeny tiny connector no idea what part number is or mounting brackets for ANY of the fans.

So here is what I have done so far.
1 Replaced stock CPU cooler with performance heat pipe version. CPU FAN 0KTDJC KTDJC / Heatsink T57JF 0T57JF its a very tight fit.
2. Replaced stock single 8 gig stick with 2 X DELL OEM 3200 RAM.
3. Added Front fan and changed top fan to NON DELL 120MM fan.
4. Moved top 92mm fan from top to hard drive bay in front. Y cable on That fan so that 92mm fan still seen as top fan. Other cable from the Y is Noctua thin 120MM 3000 RPM fan mounted on 13P1-4ZN0201 metal bracket. Another 120MM Noctua Fan in plastic bracket mounted in the front. Don't know what the part number is because it has no PPID or markings.
5. Moved 3.5 hard drive to bottom bay.
6 Adjusted Optical Drive to stop buzzing noise when DVD inserted.
I think N1C1D is the VRM heatsink but cant find one yet.

Upgraded power supply is needed unless you got a 1000W unit.
Stock CPU and PSU is 65W and 300W
Your CPU is 120W so heatsink and front fan and power supply would need to be changed. It will also complain about the VRM heatsink.
Thats why I have tried to order one so that I can add that.
Not sure if it will ever come in but I ordered on amazon with credit card so they wont be taking my money if they deliver nothing.
I am NOT Dell so I have no Idea on your other questions YMMV

Thanks for those information.
Will the i9-10850K be compatible with the current W480 motherboard that the Precision uses? The documentation only lists the i9-10900/F/K/KF but Intel documentation shows both the 108 and 109 as similar CPU.
And upgrading the BIOS, the product support page states the newly dated update 05/2021 as 'URGENT'.
If I upgrade the BIOS now and decide to upgrade the CPU later, then do I need to re-update the BIOS?
Or do I only need to do it once assuming no other updates on the BIOS is available?
I actually already purchased the Precision 3640 for around $789.03, listed as 'New', at Dell Outlet store. And it got delivered last Sunday.
With the upgrades on power supply and SSD, I would estimate it to be around $981.94. If I include the i9-10850K (assuming this CPU will work) on the W480 motherboard, then total would be around $1,345.76.
Building my own PC with comparable specifications on the Dell Precision 3640 that I already purchased, a DIY would cost a wee bit higher to around $984.76. That is the reason I went ahead with the purchase of the Dell Precision 3640.
However, I realized that doing an i9-10850K PC build with other components similar to the planned upgrade on the Dell Precision 3640. The total cost is estimated to be around $1,171.37.
But then again, the Dell Precision 3640 came with a 3 year basic warranty. So I can probably put a dollar value on that Dell 3 year basic warranty as the difference of $174.39 between the $1,345.76 and $1,171.37.
So yeah. I am debating whether to open the Dell Precision 3640 retail box and proceed with the SSD and PSU upgrade, as I have not opened it since it was delivered Sunday. Or return it assuming it will be approved and will be a full refund. If there is a restocking fee or any fee at all, then I'll just keep it and stick with the i5-10500 for now. I could upgrade to i5-10600K but it would not make much difference I think and will just waste more money.
Sorry for the long mumbling.

You posted that you upgraded the CPU fan and other stuffs. Do I need to upgrade the CPU fan also if I upgrade the CPU down the road?
Based on the exploded diagram/picture, there seems to a a small fan below the optical drive and a bigger fan on the bottom. Is the small fan on the front-top, the 92mm that you have shown on the picture? I have not opened the retail box yet since it was delivered Sunday.
Thank you.

Hi.
What about CPUs from 11th gen ? Is this motherboard compatible with them ?
I've read on Intel website that W480 chipset supporting 10th and 11th
"11th Generation Intel® Desktop Processors are not compatible with motherboards based on B460 and H410 Chipsets. Intel® Pentium® Gold G66xx, G65xx, G64xx processors and Intel® Celeron® G59x5 processors are not compatible with motherboards based on W580 and W480 Chipsets. Intel® Celeron® G59x0 processors are compatible with motherboards based on Z490, H470, B460, Q470 and H410.
Some Intel® 400 Series Chipset based motherboards may need a BIOS update to support 11th Generation Intel® Core™ Desktop Processors."
