Headset option unavailable

When I plug in my headset with an in-line microphone, Dell Audio does not present me with an option to identify the device as a headset.

Headphones are Traxx Lunar Headphones with in line microphone.  They are not Bluetooth; they are plugged in with a 3.5 mm jack.

Operating System is Windows 10 64-bit.

The computer tower has two jacks for headphones and two jacks for microphones – one set on the front, another set on the back.  When I plug this device into the headphones jack, a window opens asking “which device did you plug in?”  The choices are only: Headphones, Speaker Out, or Dell Speaker Out.  If I choose headphones, I can hear through them, but I cannot use the microphone.

When I plug the device into the microphone jack, no window opens, but once I was able to get the microphone to work, but then the headphones would not work – no sound.

I have updated the Dell Audio driver.

How do I fix this?

Most (actually all that I've seen) with separate headphone and microphone jacks, a "TRS" connections.  Not "TRRS" as is the case with most combo headphones.  An adapter is needed to split the headset and microphone into two TRS jacks to work.

Here is an example of a TRRS to two TRS plugs splitter.

Thank you, but why won't Dell Audio give me the option to identify this device as a "headset"?

Essentially because to the audio out port, it literally is only a headset.

Get the splitter mentioned above and use it to split the headset and mic lines.  Plug the two plugs into the computer.  Your should see the headphones still identified, and should have the option to select "microphone".

To be clear,  you need the second item shown in the pictures.  One socket, two plugs.  Then you'll be able to select headphone and  mic drivers separately, and you're good to go.
