Check your cabling by reading the manual again...start at age #7. The PERC H840 have also the cabling guide inside.
The non-RAID HBA have green LEDs .... not sure if the H840 has also connection LEDs.
After that enter the system setup again and create a RAID ... you can list the phys. Disks also.

Dell offer a full blown Raid Card (Hxxx) or a simple passtrough (HBAxxx) one. The later doesnt support "RAID". So which card do you have?
Edit: You need the H840 for a HW Raid.

i check the quote we have PERC H840 RAID Adapter for external MD14xx, so for the MD1420 storage configuration, i can do it through the Bios in the 650xs server ? or can it be done throught the "OpenManage" ? thanks

Within the iDRAC WebGUI there is a "storage" section. I didnt like this because it creates configuration JOBs instead of a "do it now" like behavior.
"I" prefer to open the console (trough iDRAC) and choose "setup" as next boot option and the server boots into system setup and than "devices" -> H840.

For sure you can edit the existing Virtual Disks within OMSA but am unsure about the RAiD creation. We need the RAiD before the OS installation and not after it.
its a 90sec job.

You configure the RAID on the PERC. Depending on your PERC:

To configure RAID settings on the MD1420 connected to your Dell 650xs server, you can use Dell's RAID management software. Install the software, launch it, and let it detect the MD1420. Then, choose the desired RAID level and set up the disk array configuration. Save the changes and apply them within the software. Refer to Dell's documentation for detailed instructions tailored to your server model. Reach out to Dell's technical support if you need further assistance.

To configure RAID settings on the Dell MD1420 storage enclosure connected to your Dell 650xs server, you need to use Dell's management software such as Dell OpenManage Server Administrator OMSA or Dell EMC Storage Management DSM. Follow these steps:
Note that RAID configuration is typically done through the management software, not the server's BIOS. Refer to Dell's documentation or contact their support for more specific instructions or assistance if needed.

@Anonymous
i have to say sorry but thats not correct. The old PowerVault Modular Disk Storage Manager is for managing the old MD3 RAID systems because for these you have a NON RAID HBA in your Server.
Yes you can expand a MD3 with a MD14x0 JBOD but the OP have a H840 Raid HBA and a JBOD attached to it. So the way to configure is iDRAC9/LCC or a little bit with OMSA. Not 100% sure about the later but iDRAC9/LCC works and for me LCC is the way to go.
The MD14x0 have no raid because its a JBOD with up 2 EMM.

Joerg
