Where can I obtain util emcpowerreset?

Hi

Following a power crash on an AIX 5L system with CX400 storage, an hdiskpowerX disk is no longer accessible.

Although I do not find any reference in the EMC CLARiiON documentation that I have available, http://santosh-aix.blogspot.com/2010/08/emc-grab.html refers to a utility named 'emcpowerreset' that might resolve this problem by resetting the reservation bit on the device.

The EMC Symmetrix AIX Support Software installed on the system (fileset Symmetrix.aix.rte 5.0.0.0) does not contain util 'emcpowerreset'.

The files included in this fileset are as follows:

Path: /usr/lib/objrepos

  Symmetrix.aix.rte 5.0.0.0

                        /usr/lib/nls/msg/en_US/sym.cat

                        /usr/lpp/Symmetrix/bin/inq

                        /usr/lpp/Symmetrix/bin/rsnodecfg

                        /usr/lpp/Symmetrix/bin/mkbcv

                        /usr/lpp/Symmetrix/bin/rmbcv

                        /usr/lpp/Symmetrix/bin/emc_cfgmgr

                        /usr/lib/methods/sym.cat

Path: /etc/objrepos

  Symmetrix.aix.rte 5.0.0.0

                        NONE

I also could not find a download link for util 'emcpowerreset'.

I will appreciate any assistance.

Regards,

Gerhard Kleynhans

Hello Anit,

No, it is not a HACMP cluster.

Hello Gerhard,

This utility is for releasing the locks in clusters. Please collect SPcollects and emcgrabs and open a ticket with Powerpath group, they should be able to help you..

Amit

Hello Amit,

Thank you for your interest.

The problem that I have is that on powerlink.emc.com I only have access with

'Powerlink Lite View'. As such I do not have access to open an SR.

The requirements for access are described as follows on

https://powerlink.emc.com/nsepn/webapps/btg548664833igtcuup4826/km/appmanage

r/km/secureDesktop?_nfpb=true

er/km/secureDesktop?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=promotionRequirementPgContentBk>

&_pageLabel=promotionRequirementPgContentBk:

The difference between limited Powerlink accounts and full-access accounts:

*

A limited account provides access to the Powerlink site and a subset of its

resources. Limited accounts are available to users who do not meet the

requirements for a full-access account (see requirements below).

*

A full-access account provides access to a range of tools, resources,

documentation, software downloads, training, and more.

Requirements for a full-access Powerlink account:

*

You must work for a company that is an existing customer, partner, or

supplier of EMC.

*

The information you provide (including company information, business e-mail

address, and type of business relationship with EMC) must all match the

information we have on record for your company.

I did previously attempt to obtain full-access privileges on my account.

However, since we purchased our two dual-node Escala PL420-R systems

integrated with CX400 storage systems via resellers (one system was in fact

purchased second-hand), the Powerlink account registry does not list our

company as either customer, partner or supplier of EMC and for this reason

an upgrade of my account to full-access privileges have been repeatedly

refused.

This is very frustrating, since we own and operate these systems containing

EMC CX400 storage systems and we have no avenue to obtain support from EMC

Support. We have been operating this way for years now. The only avenue that

I currently have for support for our EMC CX400 systems is Googling and this

forum. This frustration has led me to the point of advising my management (I

am data center manager for data-processing services hosted by a private

company for government agencies) to steer clear of considering any future

procurement of computing equipment that contains EMC storage.

Your suggestion yesterday that I open an SR, did prompt me to try once again

to obtain access to EMC Support. I did fill out a web form at

http://emcinformation.com/contact_en/REG/.ashx with an enquiry to how we may

obtain EMC support. I have not yet received any response. I think you will

understand that I do not have high hopes for obtaining an avenue to EMC

Support.

Gerhard

Hello Amit,

Thank you very much for your assistance and for the information provided.

I sent an email to powerlink@emc.com with the details as advised and I am

awaiting response.

I will also review the knowledge base references that you sent on usage of

the 'emcpowerreset' utility.

Sitting with a failed hdiskpowerx device without support last week, I

decided to recreate the failed VG and hdiskpowerx device (etc, etc) last

week and restored over 650 GB of data. The system being fully operational

again, my focus is now on trying to get EMC support place for the future and

to then to review with EMC Support how this serious type of event (loss of

PVID of hdiskpowerx device following power crash) can be handled in the

future without time-consuming data recovery.

I did run emcgrab while the failure existed and I can send the output

archive to EMC Support for analysis, once access to EMC Support has been

arranged.

Regards,

Gerhard

Hell Gerhard,

Hopefully, you should get access to Powerlink. While you are waiting for EMC Powerlink team, I'll also suggest you to get in touch with your reseller and ask him to help you to your Clariion registered with EMC, so that process could be a bit easier.

Let me know if there is anything else I could help you
