What to do w/ ODM and PP when I upgrade AIX?

I have several IBM AIX servers that I'd like to upgrade.  Below are some pertinent information:

Hardware Platform:  IBM Power 5 (P5-590)

Current OS:  AIX 5.3 TL8 SP3

New OS:  AIX 6.1 TL6 SP1

ODM:  5.3.0.1

PowerPath:  5.1.0.0

SYMCLI:  6.5.3.0

What should I plan for during this OS upgrade, and in what sequence?  The PP documentation for 5.3 indicates that in a AIX upgrade, I will need to uninstall PP first, upgrade AIX, then reinstall PP.  But this information is not in the PP documentation for 5.1.  Also, there is no information regarding the ODM in the event of an AIX upgrade.

Thanks in advance!

John

Hi John.  The PowerPath documentation does get updated between releases.  We have added new upgrade content.

With regards to the ODM, what is your storage array type(s)?

Thanks, Brion

According to E-Lab, the OS, ODM, and PowerPath can all be upgraded at the same time if needed.

Hi Brion.  My hosts use DMX-3 and NS960 storage.  Since I'm taking a downtime to upgrade AIX, I am considering taking this outage opportunity to upgrade PP and ODM.  Unless both, at my current level, can support on-the-spot upgrade.  Thanks!

Somehow I missed your last response.  It never showed up on my Inbox.

So this is what I'm thinking, procedurally.

1. Set all my VGs on EMC SAN to autostart=no.

2. Varyoff my VGs.

3. Stop the EMC Solutions Enabler daemons.

4. Stop ECC.

5. Stop NaviSphere.

6. Uninstall PP 5.1.0.0.

7. Upgrade ODM to 5.3.0.4, since ODM 5.3.x supports upgrades without uninstallation first.

8. Shut down AIX.

9. Migrate AIX from 5.3 to 6.1.

10. Install PP 5.3.0.1.

11. Manually vary on VGs on EMC SAN.

12. Set the VGs' autostart=yes.

13. Celebrate with a glass of bubbly.

Does this sound like a solid plan?
