Unregister license in Powerpath Virtual Appliance 2.0

I have ESXi servers that drop off the network permanently. How do I unregister (reclaim) the license from a non-existent server. The only way I can think of is to use rpowermt and run a unregister that way. How to I do this via appliance GUI?

Basically, any server that shows up in the "Unmanaged" category will need to be removed.

Thanks.

Thats right, unless you want to shut those IPs down for 20 hours so that vCenter and vApp dont see it. vApp will return the license in that case. Btw, this 45 day period is a moving window, in case RTOOLs via vApp or standalone get to work any command on that host, the license is again renewed for another 45 days.

Support ticket will help you get special rtools to checkin the license if you cannot wait that long or shut donw the IPs for 20 hrs.

Hi Daniel,

The licenses used by "unmanaged" hosts will get released after 20 hours.

I still have many records showing up under "Unmanaged" and they look like legit records other than the fact that the host can not be contacted. Any way of manually removing these?

Hi,

Rpowermt unregister will not get the license back to ELMS for ESXI host which are already dropped off from
network.
Power Path has a special build for rpowermt which can check-in the licenses back. This build is only for
customer support use. Customer need to provide host details to customer support and they can do license check-in using that special build. !

I'll like to elaborate more on previous comments posted by PowerPath- Engineering ( You have our attention:-)).

For a situation like yours, PP/VE ESXi licensed hosts not available /non reachable etc, we have several ways to recover.

1) vApp will detect this and try to "check-in" the license back to license server within 20 hours. Obviously this is not working in your case , as you stated. The reason can be that vApp still thinks that the IP is active. To properly root casue the issue, we need to analyze the logs and recommed you to open a support ticket with EMC.

2) Rtools default "linger" period is 45 days. If the host is not accessed within that period , the license is automatically "checked-in" back to license server. We can always argue on this time period but this is kept 45 days to avoid frivolous check-in, check-outs of licenses. Just in case this needs to be checked in earlier than that then we have a special RTOOLs build that needs to be run by EMC customer support to check-in the license to license server.

I suggest open a support ticket so that we can investigate why vApp didnt checkin the license back.

Thanks,

Ankur Dixit.

Yes, the IP is still active. We configured vSphere to disallow the vApp from seeing certain systems we do not want licensed. I just need to wait 45 days then?

That explains it, thanks.

Yes - Daniel, this is a very poorly elaborated tool if you ask me. It's a management tool for licenses and you don't get to manage it. In your case, you need to call Support to remove and re-license a new host or wait 20 hours ( sometimes takes longer) to register a new host. I think this is counter productive if you ask me. Also, if you need to unregister a host that's dead right away to register a new one, you need to to connect to the dead host to register it - clever ah?

Thanks Manny and Daniel for feedback and comments. Consistent with the "set and forget" design philosophy of PowerPath we've tried to make this license management tool as hands-off as possible after initial setup and discovery. Obviously more work is needed on resolving the "stuck license" scenario without the need for opening an SR.

Feedback on the tool is appreciated, either in this forum or via email directly below.
