I have some disks on HP-UX server that are being managed by powerpath

They are not suppose to be managed but when powerpath was installed they were automatically managed

Because of this it is causing issues with ServiceGuard and I need to unmanage them

I am not a HP-UX admin so I do not know if I can unmanage them on an active server.

I know the commands but wondering if I should bring the application down first , run powermt to unmanage them , and than reboot the server or if I can just run the unmanage command and it will work without impacting the application /server

Does anyone know the answer?

Thanks

You can find most of your answers by searching the EMC Support site for the document PowerPath for HP-UX 5.2 Installation and Administration GuidePowerPath is installed above the HP-UX MPIO nMP; we've had to unmanage boot device paths from PowerPath.  We've only had to reboot in the case of boot devices.

By default, PowerPath on HP-UX will attempt to manage all paths between detected disks and supported storage systems.  You can remove paths from PowerPath control using the command powermt unmanage.  Once you've removed the disks from PowerPath control, you'll want to use powermt save to set the new configuration.

If you have multiple paths to the devices, you should be able to unmanage the paths live without downtime.  As with all things, you should always test this as much as possible, before committing, as every application and configuration is different.  You can expect PowerPath will block I/O on a path during the unmanage operation.  If your application is, in anyway, I/O sensitive, you'll want to perform this operation during a period of low usage.

Let us know if that helps!
