Trouble updating Dell r630 with Platform Specific Bootable ISO - No iDRAC

Hi,

I have tried to update my Dell r630 to the latest firmware by using booting into the Platform specific bootable iso from a USB-stik.

After first boot in to the USB it looked like it updated some of the drivers and firmware. However it rebooted into the platform specific bootable USB stick and got stuck at "Collecting inventory".

After 14 hours without any progress I manually turned off the power and booted into the platform specific bootable again. Where it came with the following error:

....Can't open IPMI device
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'unsigned char'
/opt/dell/updatepackage/BIOS_7YNRC_LN_2.11.0.BIN.HcbLwE/spsetup.sh: line 1392: 7758 Aborted $cmd "$@".
The updated failed to complete
BIOS_7YNRC_LN_2.11.0 could not be installed
Done! Please run 'dsu --inventory' to check the inventory
Exiting DSU!

I can access iDRAC login screen but when I try to log in it just displaying... verifying credentials. On the boot it says that the Life Cycle Controller is disabled.

The server is without drives and raid controller.

I have attached different pictures of the screen output.

I have the following questions:

  • The error massage says that I should run 'dsu --inventory'. How should I do that? When it boots up I goes directly into the update firmware mode. Is there someway to get into a console mode?
  • How should I proceed from here?
  • Should I create a Centos boot drive and manually try to update the Life Cycle controller from the Centos live image?

Any help is highly appreciated - thanks.

Just, if anyone else experience the same issue. I managed to reset the iDRAC by holding down the power bottom for 30 seconds and then boot into the SLI boot disk and then update the Life Cycle Controller.

I just tried to manually updating the Life Cycle Controller from the bootable SLI and I got the following error message:

Collectig inventory...

Hello badura,

I'm sorry to see the firmware update is having an issue while using the platform specific ISO.

Did you try to re-download to make sure you got a good download?

Try a  flea power drain (shut down, disconnect power cables, hold in power button 20 seconds with cords removed) then reconnect power. Boot to ISO to run updates.

You may also try the

DELL EMC System Update, v.1.9.0

 https://dell.to/2F9AQh6

Instructions are at the bottom of the page.

Please let me know how those go and if still fails let me know the following:

  1. OS?
  2. Current iDRAC, LifeCycle Controller and BIOS version?
  3. Can you log into the DRAC?

Yep! Definitely tried re-downloading.  I've tried pretty much every version (32/64 EXEs, extracting firmimg.d7, etc.) and methodology (ISO, DSU, LCC, USB Live CDs, Web Portal, racadm [local/remote] fwupdate / update, TFTP, etc...) for updating, but nothing seems to work. I even 'reverted for deployment', reset iDRAC settings, unplugged / drained power (flea), and performed a nvRAM cache clear by switching the jumper...

Running DELL EMC System Update, v.1.9.0 right now, but it also failed ...

Trying to connect using https
Fetching SAS-RAID_Firmware_N3T11_WN64_25.5.7.0005_A15 ... Installing iDRAC-with-Lifecycle-Controller_Firmware_KRCXX_WN64_2.75.75.75_A00
iDRAC-with-Lifecycle-Controller_Firmware_KRCXX_WN64_2.75.75.75_A00.EXE could not be installed
Installing SAS-RAID_Firmware_N3T11_WN64_25.5.7.0005_A15
Installed successfully
Some of the updates got failed, Please check the logs for more details.
Please reboot the system for successful update(s) to take effect Done!
Please run 'dsu --inventory' to check the inventory
Exiting DSU!

Do I need to downgrade the BIOS to a certain version to update iDRAC? Feels like I tried almost everything..

Answers to your questions:

1.OS - Right now, Windows Server 2019 v1809

2.Current iDRAC, LifeCycle Controller and BIOS version?

BIOS Version: 2.11.02.

Firmware Version: 2.02.01.013.

Lifecycle Controller Firmware: 2.02.01.014.

IDSDM Firmware Version: N/A

3.Can you log into the DRAC? - Yes, via web and ssh (sometimes I need to flea power drain to access …)

Thanks for your support Ray; much appreciated!

Hello badura,

Thank you that is good information.

Try stepping it up incrementally using the firmimg.d7 in the DRAC GUI:

2.10.10.10 : https://dell.to/3nxulpx

2.40.40.40 : https://dell.to/30J1RiS

2.75.75.75 : https://dell.to/3nt55kk

Please let me know results.
