PE R540 Backplane Firmware Update fails with SUP0517
Hi, I recently purchased a used PE R540 <Private data removed from public view. DELL-Admin>.
Using Lifecycle Controller, I performed every firmware updates except the 14G Expander Backplane.
The backplane firmware is at 2.41. Lifecycle identifies an available update to 2.52.
But when I perform the update, I get the error message SUP0517, saying "Unable to update the 14G Expander Backplane firmware to version 2.52 because the operation is not supported or the device is in a locked state or the device is not present in the target system."
There isn't much information on the web about this issue.
My R540 backplane configuration is 12 x 3.5" drive bays.
I see 2 cables connected to the backplane, the SAS/SATA cable connected to the HBA card and another one connected to the motherboard.
One difference I noted from the initial server configuration, the server was origibally delivered with a PERC H330.
Now, the HBA card is a LSI SAS 9300-8i flashed in IT mode.
Could that be the reason the backplane is not able to update?
Help would be much appreciated.

Hello all,
I just wanted to share that I managed to update the Backplane Firmware to the latest version using the Dell Server Update Utility
https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-ca/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=rcpvg&oscode=ws22l&productcode=poweredge-r540
Hope that helps someone.

Hello, thanks for choosing Dell. I think this is happening because it went from Dell certified H330 to a 3rd party non-Dell part component. And backplane is not subjected to automatic firmware update. I'd understand this may inconvenience you but as long as the system is up and running I say you can leave it as it is.
Respectfully,

Thanks Young E, I suspected as much. I don’t have a Dell PERC H330 to confirm it, but the system operates normally. I’ll follow your advice. Thanks again.
