memory question

Hi,

We have an Power edge R910 that currently have:

128 GB memmory:

8 X DUAL IN-LINE MEMORY MODULE, 16GB, 1600, 2RX4, 20D6F, BIC

we want to add 128 gb more memeory to the server

I have 2 question:

1. Currently we can only buy 8 gb DUAL Rank or 32 gb Quad Rank.

can we use any of above memories and mix it with our current memeory modules?

2. in whitch empty memory banks and in whitch order can we add the new memmories?

Thanks

I suppose that you have only 2 memory risers populated. How many populated risers do you have? For optimal memory configuration, you will need 8x 8 GB modules (64 GB additional memory)  or 8 x32 GB modules (256 additional memory). When using 32 GB modules, they will have to be populated in white sleeves followed by 16 GB DIMMS. Overall, you will require an equivalent number of memory modules are the 16 GB modules. However, for additional 128 GB memory, you will need additional 8  16 GB DIMMs.

Let me know whether this answers your question.

Hi Robert,

Thank you for your reply,

I do my best to answer your question,

I suppose that you have only 2 memory risers populated

Unfortunatly I dont know because this server is in a data center and I cannot look in to the hardware.

if you like I can send you the service tag of the server, server has default factory config, since we bought the server we did add some harddrive to the server.

So if I undertood you correctly we cannot mix Dual Rank memories with Quad Rank memory  and also we cannot use the 8 GB with our current 16 GB memeory right?

Now to achieve adding extra128gb memory because we cannot get the 16gb memory what should we do?

Thanks

Hello.

So if I understood you correctly we cannot mix Dual Rank memories with Quad Rank memory  and also we cannot use the 8 GB with our current 16 GB memory right?

Mixing Dual Rank DIMMs with Quad Rank DIMMs is allowed. However, the Quad Rank DIMMs have to be installed first, ie in the memory slots with white sleeves then followed by other Ranks. You can still use the 8 GB memory modules but you will require the same number of modules as the 16 GB modules; 8x 8 GB. Hence, you will only add 64 GB of memory instead of the 128 GB that you desire.

Now to achieve adding extra 128 GB memory because we cannot get the 16 GB memory what should we do?

Based on my assumption and your memory requirement, you can only add extra 128 GB of memory using 8x 16 GB modules. I will need your service tag in order to look up your system configuration to determine the number of processors and risers installed and then provide an alternate configuration if my assumption is not correct.

I already done that, and in my pervious post mentioned it.

I will send it one more time

Your system consists of 2 processors with 4 memory raiser cards, Raiser A, B, C and D. See table below on how to add 128 GB of RAM using 4x 32 GB modules as you had suggested.

You will use only risers A and C to install the 32 GB modules on slots 1 & 2 of channel 0 (CH0) and install 8 GB modules on slots 5 & 6 of CH0 and slots 7 & 8 of channel 1 (CH1). However, this configuration is not shown as supported and may not be optimal. As such, the system may not POST or may require you to press F1 key on every reboot to continue.

For optimal memory configuration, we recommend that you purchase 8x 32 GB modules (total memory 256 GB as required) and install them on the slots with white sleeves on the 2 risers or purchase additional 8x 16 GB modules (with 128 GB upgrade) and install on the same slots across all the 4 risers. You can purchase the 16 GB modules from third party retailers as they are currently out of stock from the Dell website in your country.

Looking at the system configuration from the Dell support site, I do see additional 2 processors ordered and likely that you now have 4 processors with 4 risers. If so, then the memory configuration will change as illustrated in the table below.

Now, you will have risers A, C,E and G with 16 GB modules populated on slots 1 & 2 of channel 0 (CH0) and slots 3 & 4 of channel 1 ( CH1). Therefore, 16 GB memory modules will be populated on the  slots with white sleeves across all the 4 memory risers.
