Error "Initializing iDRAC"

Hi everyone

I have a server T620 PowerEdge iwth vmware vsphere, I didn't did nothing yesterday only power on the server to practice with some linux servers, then power off the server.

Today I power off the server, I heard the fans running very fast, and the screen on the monitor is "Initializing iDRAC", this happened in 3 times then  that I restart the server, but nothing, then I received this message "iDRAC initialization error"

Can someone help me please? I dont know what do or where start.

Hi,

May I know if the iDRAC is still accessible via IP? If yes, try to do a soft reset at it's GUI.

Are you able to ping the iDRAC IP and not able to access iDRAC GUI, try SSH to the iDRAC IP and do a racadm reset: https://dell.to/3hUNPkS

If it does not work, do a hard reset following the guide above.

Let me know the outcome.

Hi,

I am not understanding you, about interface no is linking and same screen error you have windows 10. Are you saying that you're using a Windows 10 system to reset the server's iDRAC? Yes you can, you need putty to SSH into the iDRAC. Though, I need to know if you're able to ping the iDRAC?

I don't know what the iDRAC ip is, I lost my notes files.
How can I get the IP you have configured?
Nothing comes out on the front panel, the screen turns blue and the notification button remains blue.
The server has an RJ-45 interface called iDRAC, I connected a network cable there but it does not blink when the server starts up or when I enter the settings with F2, that's what I mean.
Unplug the power cable, press the power button for 30 seconds without results, I read this online.
If my desktop is Windows 10, what can I do from here?
Server = T620
OS = Vmware Vsphere ESXi 6.5
iDRAC = 7
Please I would appreciate any suggestions, sorry if I cannot express myself well beforehand.

Hi,

Are you still able to access to the OS? If yes, you can install OMSA to gather some information from the server: https://dell.to/3jI6l0s

WilliamsMax,

Power issues are the typical reason an iDRAC will fail to initialize. Unsupported or failed hardware in the system is another common cause.

Now after reading I see that you pulled the power cables and drained the flea power, but after doing so did you wait 2 minutes after you installed the power cables, before you powered the server? I ask as that time allows the iDrac to initialize before starting the server.

If that does not resolve the issue then draining flea power, clearing NVRAM, and taking the system to minimum-to-POST are basic troubleshooting steps that should be performed.

Normally if you are able to boot to an operating system then you can try flashing the iDRAC/LCC firmware. If it will not perform a flash then you can try updating the system BIOS and then try the iDRAC update again. Now since you have ESXi you can't update from the OS, so I would suggest doing so from the Platform Specific Bootable ISO found here

If you are unable to resolve the issue then the most likely part to replace would be the system board, as the iDRAC is integrated into the system board.

Let me know what you see.

Hi friend

To begin by saying, I am new to troubleshooting DELL hardware, but if there is a guide to follow and perform procedures, I can do it.
I'm a bit confused, the first answer tells me about the colleague @DELL-Joey C  telling me to install a file on the ESXi, I already did it, now I don't know what to do next.

Now I understand there is another alternative from what you tell me, I am going to switch off and wait 2 min again.

To contextualize, I am at this point, I press F1 and manage to access the ESXi, the fans sound very loud, I can start the virtual machines but obviously this is annoying.
What do I do from now on?
1- You tell me to delete the NVRAM, how do I do that?
2- Start at minimum POST, which devices should I only connect
3-I am downloading the bootalber ISO.

What happened next? sorry for the inconvenience, I hope you can help me

1. You clear the NVRam by powering down and then locating and moving the NVRAM_CLR jumper on the motherboard, seen below, then you power up to clear the NVRAM. After doing so then power back down and restore the jumper to its original location.

2. Minimum to Post for the T620  •System Board  •CPU1 with heat sink (minimum for troubleshooting)  •Single DIMM configuration with DIMM in socket A1  •Control Panel with cable (to power system on) • PSU (and for redundant PSU also the PDB/PIB) Remove everything else internally and externally other than those devices.

Let me know how it goes.

My expectation is that nothing short of a motherboard replacement will resolve the error.

If a firmware update will resolve the issue, it will be the iDRAC firmware. The .ISO I linked to is scripted to update the whole platform. If you only want to try flashing the iDRAC, I would follow the article in the second link.

The change of motherboard would complicate me a lot, could you tell me the step by step of how to update, when you mean to update you mean the BIOS or iDRAC? which do i do first?
where can I find a step by step manual to do it?

Hello dear

I did the jumper as shown in the image,

1.png

after turning on I got a message "Caution the jumper is installed", after that I turned off the server, reconnected the power and turned it on.
The message still of "Initializing iDRAC", this time I collapse a little more in showing me the POST message,
Get to the same page previously shown

ResultResult

I want to add that currently the server only has 1 power cable connected.
Please how can I continue to solve this?

It looks to me that you will need to replace the system board to resolve this error. However, you can try running a firmware update to see if it will complete. You can do this using the bootable firmware .ISO linked below.

You can also try following this article to recover using the .d7 firmware file.

The equipment is not guaranteed, could you please help me?
I already have the .ISO downloaded, is there a manual to perform the update?
in the case of firmimg.d7 what type of SD is connected to the computer? is a T620, any conventional SD can be placed?
Thank you
