Dell Idrac SMTP Config Setup -How to

Hello,

We are trying to setup SMTP alerting for our Idrac9. We haven't yet been able to get this to work. On the iDRAC Settings/Settings/SMTP (Email) Server Settings) page, we configured the settings. Then, we clicked the SMTP Email Configuration hyperlink. After configuring info here, we sent a test email, and got this error message:

RAC0225: Sending the test mail failed

How do we verify what the DNS Idrac Name should be and how do we verify what the Static DNS Domain Name should be?

Well.. most of the time the problem is based on the following

  1. iDRAC dont resolve Hostnames because of a not reachable DNS (mistyped or missing FW rule for port 53) and you have configured a FQHN in the smtp settings. Try to use IP address for your SMTP server for testing
  2. The new iDRAC default for connection encryption is StartTLS or so and your internal SMTP cant handle it. I see this often with long lifed MS Exchange servers which arent updated to a new modern configuration. Try "none" for testing
  3. The Exchange Receive connector doesn allow anonymous relaying by default. You have to configure the security rules and specify the IP, or sender name .local or allowed as long as the receipient is a internal address.
  4. There is a Firewall between your iDRAC and your SMPT Host

Because of our iDRAC ´s are in in their own IP subnet my Admin can lurking on the GW if there is a DNS or SMTP request. Otherwise we check the SMTP logs.

The sender name is created based on iDRAC name and Domain if you like. Otherwise its something like   idrac-<STAG> or just <STAG>@yourdomain.com.  We always configure iDRAC Name like  "remote<hostname>@acme.com" where "acme.com" is the Static DNS Name or the value whichs comes trough DHCP.

Since a couple of iDRAC generations i think you can specify the sender name also on the SMTP settings as well as authentifications.
