XtremIO and Oracle OEM Integration - Provisioning with module DBaaS ?

DBaaS is a shared platform to provision database services on, self-service provisioning, scale-up/out, scale-down/back and retirement services, chargeback based on database usage. DBaaS can provides developer or  a project owner a new database service with(out) seed data, provides QA a full database refresh for intense load testing, and to create multiple clones for functional testing on subset data.

EMC Storage Plug-in for Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c is the next generation of EMC’s storage plug-ins for OEM; it brings new insight to the Oracle DBA who is using EMC storage for their databases environments.  EMC Storage Plug-in for OEM12c  is designed to help storage administrators and database administrators collaborate on tasks such as capacity planning, performance root cause analysis, and optimization of storage configurations for databases.

DBaaS and EMC Storage Plug-in are both under Oracle Enterprise Manager, and can work together to provide Oracle DBAs ability on management of databases and storage systems.

more about DBaaS, as you explain OEM DBaaS module with EMC storage Plug-in offer to Oracle DBAs ability on management of databases and storage systems.

But a little bit more inside DBLM ( Oracle DBaaS ) could we use natively use XTremeIO snap/clone/refresh diretcly with Enterpise manager.

From my point of view, EMC Storage plug-in for OEM offer the ability to monitor EMC Storage from OEM but not allow storage provisionning (LUN creation/deletion, Snapshots).

To use Clone feature, DBaaS support the storage "snapshots" via ASM and Oracle Snap Clone feature.

Before 2015, Oracle supported NAS storage only : Oracle ZFS and Ntap.

Since February 2015, Enterprise Manager (12cR4) / Snap Clone support the EMC SAN Storage : VMAX / VNX.

I don't know if an EMC plug-in is required for that.

Using Snap Clone on ASM and EMC storage provides the ability to create ‘live’ thin clones of databases that are on ASM. A live clone is NOT snapshot based but rather a live copy of the database, residing on copy-on-write storage technology that can be within the same cluster or indeed another one. Both single instance and RAC are supported – supported versions are 10.2.0.5 or higher of the database, 11.2 and higher of the Grid Infrastructure code. This functionality works on both EMC VMAX (with TimeFinder VP Snap) and VNX storage appliances.

As you can see there are some strong interest to integrate our storage with DBaaS on a provisionning/self-service use case.

For my Customer (global account), this is key for DBA.

We are pushing XtremIO for DB with all the benefits of free clone, etc.

But if DBA can not manage this from OEM/DBaaS,  our benefits are reduced.

==> Who can we contact - Product Manzger or R&D - to discuss about OEM plugin roadmap ?

We are working on a mutl-million $ deal with a LOT of Xbricks ...

So I am sure we can raise their attention.

If you would like to contact product team, the normal process is to raise a RPQ through local account team, but please be aware that would take some time for them to make decision and development, and it will need effort from both EMC and Oracle.

If your customer is using VMware, EMC resells a product that provides the ability to manage DBaaS from Oracle's OEM.

The integration is between OEM and VMware providing the DBA the ability to monitor and manage the VMware eco-system from OEM. -Randy

Trying to pick up on this post, as no proper answer seems to have been provided.

I am in the same situation, with an Oracle DBA having read the same blog, and now wants to use SnapClone to create snaps of a single DB instance within an ASM diskgroup with multiple DB instances, and be able to restore the individual instance without affecting the others.

To achieve this with AppSync, it seems the customer would have to redesign his ASM layout, and have one ASM group per DB instance. This is not an option at this point.

The blog referred claims that the SnapClone with ASM and EMC storage should be able to achieve this, but only lists VMAX and VNX as supported storage. Does anyone know if XtremIO is supported for this setup? If so, or if not, what is the technology that makes this work?

The below infromation are from Oracle official document:

Enterprise Manager offers two solutions with snap clone:

• Hardware Solution: Vendor specific hardware solution which supports NetApps, Oracle Sun ZFS storage appliance, EMC VMAX, and VNX.
• Software Solution: Storage agnostic software solution that supports all NAS and SAN storage devices. This is supported through use of the ZFS file system, and the CloneDB feature.

The hardware solution is vendor specific with listed EMC storage systems of VMAX & VNX, while the software solution is vendor agnostic support all SAN & NAS storage, which should include XtremIO.

The hardware solution is managed by storage appliance, the software solution is managed externally like Solaris Cluster or Hypervisor Cluster.

Hi Marius, just curious, any specific reason to make multiple instance clones in the same ASM disk group, seems it is an unusual way to what we usually do?  We usually make clone to other disk group and restore back to the original one.
