Timefinder clone from snap ?
We are fairly new to TimeFinder tools with Oracle 11gR2 and ASM, but have been experimenting successfully
reproducing large databases using clones. In an effort to save storage space, we're also experimenting in test
and dev scenarios with snaps.
A DBA posed this question: if we create snaps but find afterwards that the change rate in the DB is too
high, could these snaps be cloned -or- is there a way for a new clone to be made and then synched to the snap ?

you could restore snapshot to another device (not the original one) but it's extremely slow process ..last time i tried it on VMAX, code 74...took 1 hour to restore 17G device. Have not tried since we went to 75. There is a change tracker (symchg) that you could use to monitor changes to data on source devices. That will tell you if you need to start with clones or snapshots will suffice. Remember snapshots introduce copy on first write penalty ..so that's something to consider as well.

TimeFinder snap is normally used for less than 20% change rate. Beyond that ratio, it's recommended to use Clone. EMC doesn't have a way to create the clone based on the previously snap, that means you can't convert a snap to clone or vice versa. Please be advised the consistent data copy is based on the time point you create your clone or split your mirror.
