Oracle compression
Hi
we would like to support one of our customers in understanding the (possible) benefits of the compression on its Oracle DB: I'm wondering if we have any tool that can support this type of analysis. The idea is to gather some info about the current, uncompressed db structure and identify the effects of the compression on the tables: we're focusing on the capacity benefits as first step, and potentially the performance impact (positive or negative) as second topic.

PS: As far as i know, DB Classify doesn't include such an option, but i never used the tool so i could be wrong.

The theme is pure DB compression for the production data using the standard Oracle features.

Hi,
It is not unusual topic discussed here for DB compression technology. Could you give more information on scenario like any hardware integration like DD deduplicate or some replication technology or purely DB itself compression feature?

Oracle has a tool to estimate of the compression ratio.

Advanced Compression, an option introduced in Oracle Database 11 g Enterprise Edition, offers a comprehensive set of compression capabilities to help organizations reduce costs, while maintaining or improving performance. It significantly reduces the storage footprint of databases through compression of structured data (numbers, characters) as well as unstructured data (documents, spreadsheets, XML and other files). It provides enhanced compression for database backups and also includes network compression capabilities for faster synchronization of standby databases.
