Fan pin out order

Did Dell change its pinout order for the cpu fan header as it crossed from gen 4 to 5?

i fried my 7040 fan and had a 9010 at work that was on its way out the door so i snagged the fan. I noticed that the 9010 fan connector order was BLUE BLACK RED YELLOW

On the 7040/5040 fan connector, the order is  BLACK RED YELLOW BLUE

So are just the cable colors different or are the motherboard pin functions in a different order?

Any help appreciated. Ive seen alot of fan discussions but cant find much in the way of 7040 fan pinouts

The order is what is required for your specific model.

I have seen no difference in the colors only the order of the pins.

Note the Difference in this adapter.

So if your fan is NON standard you may need to remove the pins and re order them to be correct.  The fans are not any different only the wire order.

Dell started making all the wires black so you cannot tell.  its not documented and its not the same on all dells all models all years.

Hello!

I have a OPTIPLEX 790 with problem in the mainboard. So I bought a generic but new mainboard goline gl-h61-ma.

The question is my cpu fan is working 100% RPM, and the noise is terrible and can't work with this PC.

Please I read a lot and can't fix it anyway, can you help me?

Now my cpu fan connector is like that:

Black Red Yellow blue is not the correct order for the 790 fan connection. Non dell boards are not supported.

Plugging Dell fan to standard or the other way round damages the board and the fan sometimes permanently.

So may I return the mainboard I purchased? And put the PC in the recycle bin? Dell obviosly doesn't sell and support this mainboard/system anymore. This is sad...

Hey speedstep,

Do you happen to know if this applies to Dell R730 fans as well? I'm hoping to re-wire a 60mm Noctua to work with the Dell 4-pin square plug.

Specifically NMB 06038DA fans: 06038da-12s-ewh (Dell R730xd) which is Red/Black/Blue/Yellow vs a normal pwm fan (in this case a Noctua, but any standard PC PWM fan is the same) with Black/Yellow/Green/Blue... I really want to re-wire to get rid of the 12000rpm fan in favor of a high quality 3000rpm fan (yes, I've taken airflow+temps into account) but I'm worried I'll fry the mobo if I wire it wrong...

Thanks!
