PE T420 Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V VM with Frozen Application State
I have a VM that is the domain controller in a stuck state. Meaning I cant login via Remote Desktop and the Hyper-V console just shows a Windows Server 2012 desktop, with no icons, no taskbar or start button. When I order a shutdown command it responds with "The application encountered an error while attempting to change the state. The operation failed with error code 32780" . The server is still semi operational providing file, print and authentication services albeit a bit slow. There is a Trend Micro security server running on it that is reporting offline.
I did recently apply a firmware update to the PERC controller to address a false battery thermal warning. I also applied win updates to the VM and host. Then a couple days after restarts I discovered this problem. I restarted the host server but the VM is still in its stuck state. There is 1 other VM on this host server and it is operating fine. Since this VM the only domain controller I am hesitant to reset/turn off for fear it wont start up. And booting to safe mode on a Domain Controller from what I recall not an easy quick safe process. So my thought is to setup a backup domain controller before resetting it. Thoughts?

Hi,
You should do a backup before trying to reboot the VM.

Windows Server Backups run nightly, and we are getting emails that they are successful. Everything appears to be running fine except Trend and a slightly slower write performance when users try to save files. The Dell Server manager reports healthy system, no hardware alerts.
