How to activate the bluetooth on Dell Latitude e6420

How to activate the bluetooth on Dell Latitude e6420

August 20th, 2015 04:00

After researching this Bluetooth issue further, I learned that Dell did not necessarily install the Bluetooth module on all E6420 laptops. I didn't see the option shown on the online build sheet (hard to believe they didn't have Bluetooth by default).

I obtained the hardware via ebay and installed it (not plug-n-play nor for the computer hardware challenged, but possible if you're willing to take your laptop apart). Afterwards, the Bluetooth then worked fine as it should. Again, why would Dell not make this Bluetooth standard rather than trying to saving a couple of cents and cause such a headache for users?

Places to look to see if your Bluetooth Connection is enabled

Click start, in search, type

bttray

click on it. this will put the bluetooth icon is the system tray, near the clock.

Hi the module is enabled in the devices and the driver date is a couple of months more recent than the update I could find.

I'm using XP.

So I checked BTtray and found several copies  e.g.

C:\WINDOWS\OEMpnp\073\Data1.cab\F54937_BTTray.exe

None of the .exe's will run upon extract because of missing wbtapi.dll

There are  wbtapi.dll (s) but they are F54515_ wbtapi.dll

Even if I extract both to the same directory/folder it still won't run.

Thanks

I have a E6420 running XP at work. The switch on the right side of the laptop turns on+off both the Bluetooth and wireless.

I have an E6420, and since I installed the OS to Win 7 64, I could not run the Bluetooth, the option appears gray me to allow connections from the tray bar icon, have no idea that it can be? Thank you very much.

Hi Achocobar,

You can try a couple of steps below to resolve this issue:

Check if the bluetooth/wireless is enabled or not in Windows Mobility Center following the steps below:

Click on Windows logo on desktop -- > Type "Windows mobility center" in search bar above that  -- > Click on it. You will be able to find option to enable or disable wireless (As an example, image is shown below):

Try Fn or Fn and F2 or can use a switch on the side to turn on/off the wireless adapter.

If the bluetooth is enabled, you can install drivers for bluetooth card from the link below:

Uninstall and re install the drivers:

  • Click on “Start” and right click on “Computer”.
  • Click on “Manage”.
  • Click on “Device Manager”.
  • Under “Network adapters”, you will find the bluetooth driver listed.
  • Right click on it and click on “uninstall”. (Check and make a note of the driver installed on your system and re-install the bluetooth driver from the below steps accordingly).
  • Check the box to delete the software.

Restart your system and click on the below link:

http://dell.to/OukFUO

  • Enter the Service Tag of your system and select the operating system.
  • You will find the bluetooth driver under “Network”.
  • Click on the bluetooth driver depending on the bluetooth card your system has. (Install the same bluetooth driver which you uninstalled from “Device Manager”.
  • Click on “Get driver File”.
  • Select “For Single File Download via Browser”.
  • Click on “Download Now”.
  • Save the driver on your desktop.
  • Once the driver is saved on desktop, right click on it and select “Run as administrator”.
  • Install the bluetooth driver by following the on screen instructions.
  • Check if the issue is resolved. If the issue still persists, update the system BIOS.

Note: Make sure the ac adapter is connected and the battery is charged 10% or above to update the BIOS. All other programs should be closed and documents saved. Also, disconnect all the external peripherals before updating the BIOS.

Click on the below link to download the BIOS:

http://dell.to/OukFUO

  • Enter the Service Tag of your system and select the operating system.
  • Go to “BIOS” and click on the BIOS available.
  • Click on "Get driver”.
  • Select “For Single File Download via Browser”.
  • Click on “Download Now”.
  • Save the BIOS on your desktop.
  • Once the BIOS is downloaded on the desktop, right click on it and select “Run as administrator” and follow the prompts on screen to update BIOS.

I am adding you as a friend; please accept my friend request and send me a private message with the system Service Tag so that I can check the system warranty details and help you further.

Please reply in case you have further questions.

I have the the issue with the Network Controller problem on my Dell Latitude E6420 laptop. It is too frustrating that I did not find on the Dell Support Driver download. Almost give up but with long and tiring research I have figured out and fixed the problem. Now my computer is working perfectly.

For those of you guys having the same issue. Try below site. It will help you figured out and fix your network problem. Maybe you have different hardware installed in your laptop but you can find and figured out.

Good Luck...guys!!!

I have an E6420, Win7 32-bit, and appear to be caught in an infinite loop of can't getting Bluetooth turned-on, drivers installed, or even showing that it is available.

There is no option displayed in any network settings window or control panel that shows Bluetooth or any options for it. The Device Manager is showing no item related to Bluetooth. Bluetooth has nothing showing in the Windows Mobility Center.

I went to the BIOS settings, and all possible buttons are selected to enable Bluetooth, etc., so it is not the hardware settings.

I've tried installing / reinstalling the latest Bluetooth drivers from the Dell support site, but about half-way through, I get a dialogue box saying, "Activate Bluetooth using Wireless Switch" with the only other option from there being "Cancel installation". The hardware wireless switch on the side of the laptop is already "on", confirmed by my WiFi being enabled and working.

Based upon this, I can't install any Bluetooth driver and can't seem to get past this point to even access Bluetooth settings ... is there any trick to fixing this short of rebuilding the system? Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Hi I have Windows 10 pro software & want to install it on Dell Latitude E6420 and Dell website is saying 6420 is not tested for win10. What should I do here. why E6420 is not tested when every other model is tested in this category. "Dell is not testing or developing Windows 10 drivers for this product. If you choose to upgrade, some features, applications, and connected devices may not work as expected."
