Port/Interface dampening workaround for devices attached to VLT domain.

We will have two S4048-ON switches in VLT with a port-channel towards an "access" switch that doesn't support port dampening. Until we replace this switch, we were wondering if there is any reason that manually shutting down it's connected interface(s) would not be a sufficient workaround during maintenance of the VLT devices?

For example, if we wanted to update the firmware on the one of VLT peers:

  • Administratively shutdown the interface on the access switch connected to the VLT peer.
  • Update the VLT peer, reboot.
  • Allow time for it to reload and join the VLT domain.
  • Administratively bring up the interface on the access switch connected to the VLT peer.

I would think that this would work to avoid any potential for loops/black-holes.

The_LostIT_Guy,

Based on the process you described your method should work fine.

Let me know if this helps.
