How to Upgrade Dell EMC N1124T-ON?

(I am not an IT expert)

I own a Dell EMC N1124T-ON switch and I'm looking to upgrade it (I prefer using the Web-UI rather than the CLI - If possible). Could anyone provide guidance on how to accomplish this? I'm interested in upgrading the operating system, firmware, and any other relevant components to ensure optimal performance and security.

This is the state of the unit:

When I enter the Service-tag at Dell support / Downloads - I get this:

* Assuming 6.8.1.4 is the latest firmware, I have a 3 parts question:

I downloaded 6.8.1.4 package and I read in the 'Upgrading Dell Networking N1100-ON Series Switches to Version 6.8.1.4.pdf'  that:

(I don't have the N1108EP-ON mentioned at the top of the page; instead, I have the N1124T-ON and based on its Service-tag I was offered this package . Additionally, I'm uncertain about whether 'firmware' and 'OS' are referring to the same thing, as both are listed as 6.8.1.4.)

So, I downloaded 6.7.1.22 package and I read in the 'Upgrading Dell Networking N1100-ON Series Switches to Version 6.7.1.22.pdf'  that:

(This fits)

  1. Is version 6.7.1.22 the latest available for the Dell EMC N1124T-ON switch?
  2. How can I initiate the upgrade process?
  3. Can I perform the upgrade through the Web-UI interface?

--

I'm familiar with the 'Upgrade Example for Dell Networking N1100-ON Series Switches' illustration in the 'Upgrading Dell EMC Networking N1100-ON Series Switches to Version 6.7.1.22.pdf' - The switch is installed in my Home Office.

I would appreciate any insights or guidance on these matters.

Hello,

There are two models of the N1100 one is the older one and the newer EP version.

Unless model says EP then have to use the 6.7 release.

(The 6.8.1.4 Release Notes document states “Please ensure to use N1108EPONv6.8.0.x.stk or later releases only on N1108EP-ON switches”)

So 6.7.1.22 is the latest for N1124T-ON.

https://dell.to/48X8Uop

Once you extract it, there will be release notes and upgrade guide.

It can be upgraded through the GUI following this article:

https://dell.to/3PqrgqR

Please note we don't do initial configuration on the forum but Dell does have Deployment Services you can contract if you contact Sales and ask for a quote if you need that.

This is confusing because like OP says it is the only recommended firmware update for my serivce tag as well which is for a N1148P-ON.

Furthermore, when reviewing the upgrade process in the pdf supplied in the download it shows steps to update on my model?

I want to believe your answer since it seems like you work for Dell but there is conflicting info. Please advise.

Hello,

When you download the update and extract you can find the Release notes. They shows as follows:

I hope that helps.

With the document you provided the link for it:

https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000103010/use-openmanage-switch-administrator-web-interface-webgui-on-dell-emc-networking-powerswitch-n1500-n2000-n3000-and-n4000-series-switches-to-update-firmware

I successfully upgraded my switch firmware from version 6.4.1.4 to 6.7.1.22.

Part 2: Updating Boot Code, CPLD and XLOADER

In the second part of the document:

"This command applies to the N1100, N1500, N2000, N2100-ON, N2200-ON, N3000, N3100-ON, and N3200-ON Series switches only": I noticed that some models have "-ON" appended to their names, while others don't. "This command applies to the N1100,..." it includes N1124-ON too?

.

"It is not required to update the boot code unless directed to do so in the release notes": Upgrading firmware from version 6.4.1.4 to 6.7.1.22, is a significant jump. I'm concerned that there might have been an intermediate release with such a requirement that wasn't included in the 6.7.1.22 release notes.

.

If this update is necessary, how can I verify which release required it and locate the appropriate instructions for updating it for my switch model?

Hi,

You can run #show version to check CPLD version, if it's not 7, you should update it.

#update bootcode

#update cpld <<unit # >> unit # is used when the switch is stacked.

Hi,

Is it possible to to check the CPLD version through the GUI?

(Assuming it's not 7)

  1. Where do I get the ZIP?
  2. (It says: "Take extra caution", that it can destroy to switch) How do I safely update it?
  3. Is it possible to to update the 3 (Boot Code, CPLD and XLOADER) through the GUI?

Hi,

Is it possible to to check the CPLD version through the GUI?

No, I don't think so.

  1. Where do I get the ZIP?

The firmware itself contains bootcode and cpld and not required separate files

2. (It says: "Take extra caution", that it can destroy to switch) How do I safely update it?

You only need to run the command that provided in the guide.

3. Is it possible to to update the 3 (Boot Code, CPLD and XLOADER) through the GUI?

No, not possible.

If you are uncomfortable with the firmware updates, perhaps you can contact the sales department for a quote of 1 time dispute of firmware update and maintenance.
