U2723QE, Datacolor SpyderX Color calibration

Maybe a bit of a premature issue because I have ordered, but have not yet received, and thus not tested myself, a pair of "Dell UltraSharp U2723QE 27" 4K UHD IPS". The plan is to color calibrate them using "Datatcolor SpyderX Pro" so that they match my "XPS 15 9570 UHD" laptop.

If SpyderX cannot detect the screen type, which of the following manual options should I choose:

  • Wide LED - Select this if your monitor has a wide gamut (Color space) LED backlight. Common monitors that fall under this category incl Apple P3 displays (iMac Retina late 2015 etc), Samsung XL20/24/30, HP DreamColor LP2480zx and other professional-grade monitors
  • Standard LED - Select this if your monitor has a standard gamut LED backlight. Common monitors that fall under this category incl Apple displays from 2009 to mid 2015, most notebooks and ultra-thin displays.
  • General - Select this if your monitor has a CCFL backlight or if you are unsure. Common monitors that fall under this category incl Apple monitors pre-2009 and other older displays.
  • GB LED - Select this if your monitor has a Green/Blue LED Backlight. These will have a wide gamut capability. Common monitors that fall under this category incl BenQ 270 and Dell UP2716D

SpyderX is an innacurate device un suited for those backlights and that cannot be software upgradeable unless you rent an spectrophotometer.
Return for refund that Spyderx paperweight and get an i1d3 colorimeter.

Also that information from Datacolor is very inaccurate:
"Wide LED" is not a single backlight type... actually those samples named in your description have a very different spectral power distribution.
"GB-LED" same here, none of these monitors use a GB-LED backlight (QLED Benq, a GB-LED/PFS phosphor hybrid the Dell)

U2723QE looks like a P3 monitor with W-LED PFS phosphor backlight and it's trivial for an i1d3 colorimeter to measure it properly.
The closest one from Datacolor inaccurate set of corrections would be "Wide LED"

Hi yumichan and many thanks for your input. Will definitely take that into consideration. One question though, you write "looks like a P3 monitor with W-LED PFS phosphor backlight", should I interpret that as an assumption from your side or that the U2723QE actually is such a monitor?

Yumichan, it won't make you change your opinion around the SpyderX :-), but the screen in the Q2723QE monitor is a "LG LM270WR9-SSA1 IPS Black" panel, https://www.panelook.com/LM270WR9-SSA1_LG%20Display_27.0_LCM_parameter_52024.html.

Would that be a "P3 monitor with W-LED PFS phosphor backlight"?

Based on the panel information provided, Datacolor's support means the Dell U2723QE is a sRGB display with an LED backlight so it is Standard LED.

It is a WLED PFS

and cannot be a Standard LED:

And SpyderX lacks of adaptability to all these variants in spectral power distribution... so it's an expensive paperweight.
