E248WFP refuses to work with XFX 7970HD

hi guys, finally finished my i7 build after so many years of pentium D horridness, which ended up getting stolen... which Tiro uspss was kind enough to give me an E4xxx computer to use during exams

anywho.... im getting some annoying display problem

specs:
i7 3770k @ stock
P8Z77i deluxe by asus
16gb ripjaws
128gb ssd
7970HD XFX 3GB
HX850
W 7 64 bit licensed

Dell 248WFP 24" entry level LCD

what happens: turn the computer on, ASUS logo appears, then the WINDOWS and the little windows balls align to make the windows logo. Screen goes blank. then a message on the LCD flickers. Here is a video along with a screenshot of the message. The flickering will go on indefinately

HOWEVER. when i plug in a different card, ie a spare 7900GT or a borrowed 6950HD it boots into windows fine:

ive tried using direct DVI, DP to DVI and DP to DVI to VGA

now, one in about 10 boots will actually make it into windows, and ive checked in catalyst control and windows gui control that res is set to 1920x1200 @ 60hz. ive even tried other resolutions to no avail (by the way, the times it does make it into windows, temps are fine and it plays games flawlessly)

The folks down at PLE (who have been dealing with this really well) have said they have never seen an xfx7970 do that, nor on their test bench could they get it to fail... so because this is a really old LCD (one of Dells first and cheapest 24" LCDs), im wondering if the LCD is not coping.. or could it be graphics?

help appreciated.... christmas is all about gaming for me....

-I did try it with a 17" LCD and it works fine, and tried this LCD on a different computer, also fine. The 248 doesnt like the 7970Hd... does anyone know why?

Are you using the Dell supplied monitor cables? What ports are on that video card?

I am having nearly the same problem! I had no problem with my original card (a nVidia 8800gt). I bought a new card a few years ago and had no problem (a Radeon 6850) and now I upgraded again to a Radeon 7850 and am getting the exact same problem as above! I was using my original supplied DVI cable. I also tried a spare DVI cable and it didn't work either. I changed over to a vga cable with a DVI connector and tat fixed it, but it's analog, not digital, which I hate! I also tried my wife's newer (but smaller) Dell monitor and it works great. All signs seem to point to the monitor.

At first I thought it was the graphics card so I RMA'd the card and got a replacement that is having the same problem. Also, to delve in a little deeper into the problem, if I turn off the monitor and turn it back on after it starts that flickering thing it works fine from that point on. It is very annoying that I have to do that, but it is a work around for now I guess.

If you have any ideas besides replacement or analog signal I'd love to hear them.

Has anyone solved this problem? I know my monitor is old but it still functions properly in most cases.  I have a newly built computer with i7-4770k and ASRock Extreme 6 motherboard with Diamond Radeon 7970 videocard and have this exact problem.

Upon boot up with my windows 8, I show post screen, windows start up splash but just at the point the login occurs I have the cannot display mode and it flashes the display on/off.  If I shut off power and power up it is fine.  Maybe 1 in 10 boots it starts normally.

I had no problem with my old windows 8 build and my nVidia card..

Hey Generide,

I never did solve that problem. Because it was still a good monitor and worked in all cases except for that one, I wound up selling it and buying a new one. Problem was fixed immediately. If you wait for a good deal at Newegg and sell your current monitor, it should wind up being about 50 bucks out of pocket or so. Plus you can get a shiny new LED monitor which is much clearer and brighter anyway, not to mention HDMI capable. Good luck!
