Latitude 7480 - Thunderbolt 3

I have a Latitude 7480. Thunderbolt 3 is optional on the '7480'. For my laptop, Thunderbolt 3 is disabled. I checked and confirmed on the BIOS. But both SupportAssist and Dell Command Update keep telling me that I must install 'Firmware update for Intel(R) Thunderbolt 3'. Of course if I try (to install the firmware update) it fails because Thunderbolt 3 is disabled on my laptop. How can I stop getting reminders to do something that can't be done??!!

Checking the BIOS, you are correct. Thunderbolt Adapter Configuration options are grayed out. So confusion is with Dell Command Update, it keep pushing the Thunderbolt Firmware update, not to mention that the recommended downloads flagged urgent include Thunderbolt Firmware.

Thanks. That's very helpful. Since a few days ago both DCUP and SupportAssist have stopped telling me that I need to install 'Firmware update for Intel(R) Thunderbolt 3'. I have no idea why. I have not installed new versions of either DCUP or SupportAssist. I have not updated the BIOS.  I have only installed routine Windows updates. This is the relevant part of 'System Information' from DCUP:

I'm mystified. But happy that the problem has gone away. For the time being?

Having the same issue with 7490's. Thunderbolt it not in these laptops, but Dell command update, keeps trying to install something that is not there.

Any progress? I tried lots of remedial actions as recommended by Dell's 'Resolution Experts'. The actions took a lot of time and effort from me. Predictably, none of them worked. The most recent recommendation was (verbatim) 'The team have suggested we try an OS reinstallation using the Dell SA OS Recovery tool as the issue seems to be on the OS.' This seems disproportionate, given that the problem does not seem to impact the performance of the machine. It is just really irritating!

I have three 7480's with the same problems, TB firmware will not update and RealTek audio fails to load drivers, all three systems have been re-imaged to OEM Dell OS and no fix. Have already returned one system to Dell for out of warranty repair, they have replaced the mainboard, another system has had two mainboards. Have about ten 7480's in productions they do appear to  be a problem.

This (from  https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-uk/000130984/some-systems-with-usb-type-c-port-lack-a-thunderbolt-3-controller) describes my particular Latitude 7480:

'Systems that have optional Thunderbolt 3 capability will have a USB/Thunderbolt configuration option listed in the BIOS regardless of having a Thunderbolt 3 option installed.

If the system DOES NOT have Thunderbolt 3 capability, the thunderbolt options will be grayed out and cannot be selected in the BIOS.'

Is that also how your problematic 7480's were configured at the time of purchase?

I have a Latitude 7480. Thunderbolt option is grayed out.  What docking station can I use ?

Is there an actual part we can buy so we can update to a thunderbolt 3 instead of the usb c display port that came standard on this system?

October 5th, 2022 10:00

I've used any docking station that will take the regular usb 3.0 plug. i'm getting a new one to test out the usb c display port i have to see if it will work on that as well. stay tuned.

so after some research, if you have the following configuration on your 7480, the thunderport 3 doesn't come standard and can't be upgraded:

On-board Intel Core i5-7300U @ 2.6GHz CPU
Intel HD 620 Graphics
PCIe SSD Connector
DisplayPort Over USB-C (No Thunderbolt 3 support)

If you have this one then yes it's standard:

On-board Intel Core i5-6360U @ 2GHz CPU
Intel Iris Graphics 540
Thunderbolt 3.0 Port
PCIe SSD Connector

or this:

Intel Core 7th Gen i7-6600U @ 2.6GHz CPU
Intel HD 520 Graphics
Thunderbolt 3 USB-C Port
PCIe SSD Connector

bottom line is if you want the thunderport 3, then you'll have to change the mother board for about $265 and it's all DIY installation.

Here is where I found the motherboards
