XPS1710 Unknown Power Adapter

Greetings... Curious if anyone else has had this issue, I've got a 13 month old XPS 1710 with Vista and the original power supply. The machine won't boot with on AC power, it tells me it needs a 130W power supply and can't determine the type plugged into it. When I boot it on battery and then plug it in, it will run on AC power but won't charge the battery... when I plug it in in the BIOS setup, it says an "Unknown Power Adapter" is plugged in.

Try another adapter - but it's more likely the power jack on the mainboard that's the source of the problem, not the adapter.

I don't have another adapter handy, left my secondary one in Afghanistan =(... is there another way to verify the plug on the mainboard, or more importantly, if that's the case, is there a way to fix it without sending Dell my unborn children as payment?

There's no easy way to verify the problem without trying another adapter. If it's the jack that's damaged, and not the mainboard, you can have a skilled soldering shop replace just the jack - cost will be around $150.

If the board is damaged, it'll cost you a new board - about $400 - plus the labor to install it.

The adapter is the first thing to try, as it will cost only $50.
