Vostro 3300 Screen Fuzzy

Hi In the last few days the screen on my Vostro 3300 has intermittently gone fuzzy and then eventually gone back to normal but since this morning it has started to go totally fuzzy from the start.  You can see lots of vertical lines and can just about see that there is a something happening in the background although you can't quite make it out clearly enough to use the device.  If I plug a monitor into the laptop however using the VGA cable the image works fine externally.

Any ideas as to whether this might be an issue with the screen or the GPU?

Hello Undrop79,

If the display is fine on the external monitor, the issue might be with the LCD. However in order to isolate the issue further, please try the following steps:

  1. Run the LCD Built-In Self-Test (BIST).
  2. Test the LCD in the BIOS Setup. To enter the computer BIOS Setup, restart the computer and at the Dell logo screen, tap until the message Entering Setup appears.

For more details please check the article on Resolving Laptop LCD Lines, Fuzzy, Color, or Blurry Issues.

Hope this helps!

The BIST didn't fix it.  it showed on the external monitor but still had lines on the device.

The BIOS was a difficult one as the lines are apparent from the very start when the device is booted up.  I pressed F2 but the external monitor wasn't receiving a signal (I don't think it will work with the BIOS).  I left the device on for 10 minutes and eventually the laptop screen cleared and it was in the BIOS screen.  I started having a look around to try an find where I could run a test from here but it soon went fuzzy again so no joy.

I've also followed the link you sent to the article.  I downloaded and installed the latest intel onboard drivers for the device.  During the install it told me that the version being installed was older than what was currently on the device and asked if I wanted to continued.  I clicked yes and when it asked me to reboot the computer I did.  Now I still have the lines when booting up but I can't seem to get a signal on the external monitor anymore so I'm worse off than when I started... :emotion-6:

Scrap that, left the device on for a while and the screen eventually flickered back temporarlily enabling me to quickly login to windows.  Once I did this the external monitor worked too.

I've continued carrying out the tests as per the article you sent me the link to.  Couldn't see the BIOS so this shows it's not an OS/Driver related problem.  I then ran the BIST test as per their instructions with computer turned off initially (didn't realise it had to be off to start with, sorry) and this time the colour screens flashed solid as per the video.  After this, the screen seemed to go back to normal.  I tried shutting the computer down and booting it back up and it stayed good for a while but after using it for about 10 minutes, it started to flicker again ad the lines have come back.  Also, I've noticed that the Windows Aero effect doesn't seem to be working anymore (not sure if it's related?).

Can this info determine whether the problem is with the screen or the graphics card?

Hi Allan,

Thanks for replying.  Unfortunately it's out of warranty so I'll need to look into sourcing a new LCD for the device but thank you for your advice.

Regards,

Christian

Hello Undrop79,

Thank you for replying. I really appreciate your efforts in troubleshooting the issue. The issue seems to be with the LCD. Please consider replacing the LCD of the laptop. Does the computer have an active warranty? You can check the warranty status here. In case of expired warranty scenario, we would not be able to extend warranty entitled services. If the warranty on the computer has expired, you may contact our Expired Warranty Services (this is for US based customers).

Please write back if you have any further questions.

I have a Dell Vostro 2520 which had the same issue. The problem is with the driver for some reason and only happens in Windows 8, 8.1 and 10.

Solution that I used (found online)-

1. Open Intel Graphics and Media from control panel (or use tray icon if available)

2. Make sure you are in advanced user mode.

3. Go to 'Power' tab from list of options on left.

4. From 'Power Source' drop down, select option 'On battery'.

5. Under 'Power Conversion Features' uncheck options 'Display Refresh Rate Switching' and 'Display Power Saving Technology'.

6. Click 'Apply' and close window.

Done!!

This has solved my problem. Hope this helps.
