Vertical Lines on Half of Display
I have an Inspiron 14Z 5423 that has been working great for a couple of years. Recently, the right half of the display intermittently shows only vertical colored lines (very thin lines). Left half of the screen is always fine. When the problem occurs, I can manipulate the screen a bit (physically) and the problem usually goes away. Slightly twisting the screen seems to do the trick. For this reason, I think the problem is likely in the display, not in the video card or mother board. It is always the right half of the display.
Is this a typical symptom of a faulty display? I have checked all connectors and everything seems to be ok. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi kwmil,
Please reply us with the snapshot of the LCD screen so that we can check and assist you further.
Also, we will have to perform the ‘LCD BIST’ (Built in Self-test) on the computer. Please follow the steps mentioned below to run the “LCD BIST’.
In addition, please connect the system to an external monitor and check if the issue reoccurs.

I ran the LCD BIST test and the screen cycled through several solid color backgrounds. The problem did not occur during this test.
I connected an external monitor and had the laptop set to display cloned image on both the laptop screen and the external monitor. I was able to reproduce the problem on the laptop screen by manually jiggling the screen. When the problem occurred on the laptop screen, the external clone screen was normal. I could never get the problem to appear on the external screen.
Attached is a photo of the laptop screen when the problem occurs. The problem is always in the same location on the right half of the screen and always the same size. Remember, this is an intermittent issue, not a continuous issue. Most of the time, after jiggling the screen a bit, the problem goes away and the screen works normally.

Unplug the system, disconnect the battery and disconnect and check both ends of the cable that runs between the system board and back of the display panel for damage. Check the cable itself for damage -- if it's replaceable (i.e., if the screen isn't a fused unit), replace the cable. If the system does have a bonded display panel, or that doesn't work, the entire top half of the system will need to be replaced.
