USB Mass Storage Device

I have an inspiron 5100 laptop - when trying to plug in a simple USB mass storage device, XP doesn't pop up a recognition window and the device is not visible in My Computer. 

The system has detected that the USB mass storage device is connected and indicates that it is working properly.  I just can't see it or access files on it....  Any ideas anyone?!?

see if you can see its volume in disk management & if you can, assign it a drive letter!

You're a star - that did it.  Problem was that I had another drive mapped as E: and it was trying to use E: as the drive path.... all working now.  THANKS!!
