Touchpad/keyboard not working

I have a Inspiron 8100 which is about 3 years old.  Today I was deleting applications preparing to give the computer to my granddaughter.  During the process, I noticed that neither the touchpad, point stick, or keyboard were working.  I had an external mouse attached so I could continue with the work (however, the external mouse doesn't work very well.   I think it needs cleaning.).

LuckiIy, I have a new computer I could use, so I looked through the forums and got some ideas on what to try.  I unscrewed and lifted the keyboard and everything looked OK.  I thought that perhaps in the process of removing programs, I accidently deleted files for the touchpad and keyboard.  I tried to reinstall the files from the drivers and utilities disk.  During this process I got the following message: "A serious internal error has occured.  Please contact Touchpad supplier."

Any ideas what I can do next?

John
