Solid State Drive Installation
Hello,
I recently purchased a Inspiron 17se and wanted to install a 256gb solid state drive as the main drive. I have created the Dell Recovery Disk set and swapped the drives. However, upon trying to recover the OS (Windows 8) the recovery disks/tool tells me the hard drive must be at least 916gb (size of the original disk) and cannot continue. The same thing happens with both drives installed (original drive in bay 1). It seems the recovery disk can't be used for the new drive. Any suggestions?
Also, a side question - is the windows 8 standard downgrade-able with Dell to Windows 7?
Thanks for any help anyone can give.
Dave

For other readers, if you are outside the U.S. you have to contact dell technical support to request backup/os discs.
The link provided by dell-sandeep only applies to customers in the U.S.

Hi Dave,
Welcome to the community.
I would like to inform you that when you have taken the backup image it would be a 916gb of harddrive space available on the system. That is the reason while trying to load the backup image it is looking for the same size of the disk.
It would be better if you reinstall the windows and softwares again once the SSD harddrive is installed.
To downgrade to Windows 7 you can check the link below in which you would be able to find more information:

Thanks and Regards

Hi Sandeep,
Thanks for your reply. However, there was no OS media sent with the laptop. Where can I obtain this?
Kind regards,
Dave

Have you managed to acquire the media yet? If so, did dell supply you with it?

That sounds really promising.
I have a long history with dell but the refusal to ship the os discs properly annoys me.
Hopefully I will be able to do the same and request the discs myself.
Many thanks for the info, and yes please do confirm if and when you receive, would be good to know for certain they follow up properly.
Thanks mate, appreciate the info.

I raised this by email to Dell Technical support separately last night but had no confirmation email so presumed my query had not been received. However, Dell called me just now and put me through to Premium support where a kind gent informed me that they are having a fair amount of customers having similar problems with the restore disks not working. He said they would send the OS install disk by next day courier free of charge. I am quite new to Dell products having purchased two recently but this service continues to make me happy in the decision to use them.
I will post back to confirm once received (just in case no disk arrives!).

Hi there is a freeprog on wd' site, its the same one that seagate uses,it may have more options in disc cloning,i used the seagate option to clone a couple of ssd's and it worked fine for me.My c drive(on the 17r se) has 4 partitions so maybe you need to sort out which is most important and what is not, anyway it will be worth a look.
