Service Tag
Dear all,
I just wanted to ask 2 questions regarding Service Tag.
1. Is it safe to tell others your laptop's Service Tag?
2. What are the benefits of Dell Laptop Service Tag apart from simplified downloading Drivers from Dell Website?

Hi Faisal Dilbagh,
Service Tag number is a unique identification number for your system.Its recommended not to share/post service tag number on public forums.
Regarding the benefits,apart from downloading drivers and other available online support (to check system configuration,check your warranty status,find compatible parts for upgrade etc),when you call support,service tag number helps to pull up your system information and identify you as the owner of the system.

1. No the Service Tag shouldn't be posted on the public forums as it can be used to collect some of your personal information. If you post it on any of these forums it will be removed alongside email addresses and telephone numbers. We don't want any rogue people collecting your service tag, telephone no. and email address and harassing you by pretending to be Dell Support. (Ultimately trying to rip you off by getting your credit card details). You can of course send it as a private message to some of the Dell Support personnel without worrying. They will have DELL- in front of their forum username e.g. DELL-Robert P.
2. It simplifies the drivers and downloads (its not working quite as it should at the moment for many systems) as you mentioned. It allows you to look at the original configuration including the ship date. It is your serial no. essentially. Dell can quickly reference it to see how much warranty you have left. You also need a unique Service Tag to register the system on the My Dell Downloads Website.
