Plug-in External Keyboard with Computer Still ON

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200, Home XP, with a connector (not USB) to connect an external keyboard. Am wondering if I may plug / unplug the keyboard WHILE THE COMPUTER IS ON without damaging anything. I ask because several years ago I did so to a desktop PC (Win95 or 98??, not sure) and that cooked the motherboard, needing replacement. I care for that NOT to happen again so wish to know the ramifications beforehand. TIA PetC
