New Dell Laptop - Using function keys

I just got a new Inspiron Dell laptop. I'm having really big issues using it due to the keyboard layout. All the function keys can only be accessed by key pressing a blue "Fn" key. I use this laptop for work and ALL the programs I use have extensive Function key shortcuts. I'm constantly turning off my wireless, turning up/down sound etc....trying to use function keys. Is there any possible way to disable the current F1-F12 key functionality's and have them use the real function keys without having to use a hotkey to access them? In the office I can use an external keyboard but I travel a lot and don't want to have to carry around a key board with me inorder to do my work efficiently. I pray there's a solution or I just wasted a lot of money on  a very nice laptop I won't end up using. I never knew laptops come with this keyboard layout that requires you to hit a hotkey to access the function keys or I would've checked first.

Thanks in advance for any solutions or suggestions.

The Function keys default behavior can be selected in the bios to Multimedia or original function keys. The 2nd one you choose will need the FN key to work. The default is the Multimedia key. I agree--it would be better with the original setup.

On Windows 7, just run Windows Mobility Center, and toggle Function Key Row to "Function Key" instead of "Multimedia key".
