Microphone array on Inspiron 1721 not working

I just got my Inspiron 1721 laptop about a week ago and here recently I decided to try out the built in webcam. The webcam works great but I can't get the mic to record my voice unless my mouth is right up to it. Then when it does record my voice the sound is very low and my voice sounds very high pitched "almost like a chipmunk." The microphone array is enabled and set on high def. etc.

 

I have done about everything that I know to do. Is it possible that the mic is just messed up?

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

I am using Vista home premium.
